[SOLVED] Computer completely crashes when playing Games

Right so whenever I play any semi-heavy load games, after a few minutes my computer completely crashes, no blue screen, no warning, just shuts down completely. This is definitely not an overheating issue in my GPU or CPU, according to SpeedFan my GPU isnt getting too hot or my CPU, i did overclock it to 4.2ghz from the base clock of 3.5 which is a ton but I have a watercooler so this isnt an issue.

And i'm not sure about my PSU but its 650watt


Again my GPU and CPU aren't overheating so maybe its my PSU? If so I need a way to test and that's why i'm here. I do plan to upgrade my computer soon so my GPU isn't so bottlenecked but its going to take awhile and I would like to be able to use the thing in the mean time. I read somewhere that my CPU might not be receiving enough power since i overclocked but i don't think that's the case since I overclocked a few months ago and this just started happening about 2 weeks ago. Not that it helps because its not a heat problem (unless its in the PSU) but i sprayed down the computer to get rid of any dust recently. Looking for some help, I appreciate it.

What are your recorded CPU temps under load, what is your PSU, make and model please.

Have you checked asus support for any upgraded chipset drivers, audio and Lan and USB and pcie etc. Windows updates can cause this kind of erratic behavior. What about a full ccleaner clean and registry clean?

It's because you OC it. There's nothing wrong with overclocking, it's just that it's like the lottery, yah win yah loose. My guess is that the CPU dosent have enough power since you overclocked it, which can result in unstable hardware. Try bringing it down a few ghz and see what happens. OC is iffy. At 4.2GHz, the cpu probably isn't over TDP yet as voltages will have been lowered below stock levels. It's not until you hit @ 4.4GHz that you'd need to actually raise voltages above stock levels and wattage draw goes up significantly per 100Hz.

Did a full clean, didnt help the issue. No updated chipset drivers available. I'm going to try and declock (not sure what to call it lol) my cpu and see if it helps, although temps arent the issue. I'll post temps when underload in a few minutes

That's a shame, i'm unsure the model of the PSU so I was hoping i didnt have to open the computer up and check but ill get on it asap. Here's the temps you asked for:

Older low quality power supply with no 80+ certification. Likely the culprit.

Id test it again since you cleared cmos. See if the problem persists.

If the issue is not gone i would upgrade your power supply.

I agree with the PSU probably at least being part of the problem if not THE problem. Every time I had one of my otherwise perfectly fine PCs randomly shut down for no apparent reason, it has been due to output filter caps going bad. In lower-quality PSUs, it is very common for the manufacturer to use under-sized and under-rated capacitors since this is the most predictable way to make them fail and generate a steady replacement stream. I repaired all of mine at a cost of under $5 in parts. Would have cost manufacturers less than $0.20 extra to use higher quality parts in the first place.

(PSUs aren't really that scary to open and modify if you act carefully. I'm kind of a noob, but I have a little experience modifying an ATX unit for other purposes)
