Ok, so for a little over a year now my computer has been crashing at random times, from right at start up to browser searching to running 3D modeling and rendering programs. Its starts with my screen going black followed by a lag in sound if I have music playing. I have upgraded the amount of memory in my computer, updated the display driver, and I have upgraded my BIOS. I have run GPU tests and temperatures are running normal. Anyone know what is the problem here? Here is some info it helps...

In that case, I really want to see both your Event Log and your crash dump.

1. Save the event log to a file and send me a copy. You can tell me where to download it via private message.
2. Find your kernel memory dump file and then follow these instructions exactly on how to read the crash dump:
2a. Go to: http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Analyze-a-BSOD-Crash-Dump/
2b. When you get to the step on page 2, post the detailed results it gives you. (Unless you solve your own problem this way :) ).

If you don't want to provide the event log and crash dump data, then I would suggest these steps instead:

1. Reinstall Windows
1a. Back up all data
1b. Format the entire hard drive, erasing all data.
1c. Re-install the computer to like-new condition using the factory restore CD
1d. Install VERY FEW programs and see how the computer works for a few days.
If the computer now works, then it was just a software problem.
If the computer still crashes, it is probably a hardware failure. At which point, you would need to check these things:
A. Event Log
B. Crash Dump
C. Temperatures
D. Clean out the dust inside the computer.

I created a txt file of the events log from my most recent crash today, (see below), the crash occured around 7:04 not sure to the exact second though.

Thanks, I am seeing some very important ones in that list that might indicate what is going on. I need to see the details on them however.

So, go back and save the event log as evtx (instead of txt). Then store the file online somewhere and send me the link via private message on this forum. Do you have any free online storage space anywhere?

This could be an overheating CPU:
Information 3/24/2014 7:03:35 PM Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-Processor-Power 26 (4) "Processor 0 in group 0 exposes the following:

This could be a damaged hard drive (or just a driver error):
Error 3/24/2014 6:28:28 PM Disk 11 None The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk1\DR1

So, I'm guessing it's your CPU causing all the problem. ... perhaps you might also have other issues (like the hard drive). If you still want to try to get the entire event log as an evtx file, you can.

For the CPU, I recommend the following:

* Open up the covers on your laptop and try to find the CPU fan
* Blow out all the dust.
* Leave the cover off, turn on the computer, go into windows, and watch the processor fan. Does it still spin anymore? If the fan doesn't spin anymore, then that will need replacing.

This manual shows how to access different devices in your laptop:
ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_laptop/esuprt_precision_mobile/precision-m6500_service%20manual_en-us.pdf

I don't know if it actually shows how to remove the covers or not (I can't see some things in the PDF).

You don't want to actually remove any parts (like heatsinks or fans), just the covers so you can see the stuff inside.
Then clean out the dust & make sure the fans still run/spin when the computer is on and in use.

I have already opened up the computer and blown out the dust, fans were working, I also have already run temperature checks in the past and everything was normal

Ok, upload the evtx file somewhere and I'll have a look at the details. There were some interesting ones in that list you gave me.
You can send me the download link via private message.

At this point, I am going to strongly recommend a complete reinstall of the OS. Many of these errors suggest there is something seriously wrong with the Windows setup -- maybe due to hardware, maybe due to software.

Here's what I was able to gather from the event log. I still don't know what is going on, but maybe others have some suggestions.

One of the logs looks very strange, almost reminiscent of a driver virus:
Error 3/24/2014 7:06:00 PM Service Control Manager Eventlog Provider 7026 None
The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
qknfd

These seem like they might be system corruption or drivers that are messed up:

Warning 3/24/2014 7:03:31 PM Kernel-PnP 219 (212)

This one looks like you could have a hardware problem with the hard drive or usb device... or a driver issue:
Error 3/24/2014 6:28:28 PM Disk 11 None
The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk1\DR1.

I recommend the following:
1. Backup all your data.
2. Completely format and erase the entire hard drive. You can use your Vista OS CD to do this. First boot from the CD, and follow the instructions here: http://www.pcworld.com/article/248980/how_to_format_your_hard_drive_in_windows.html
Skip to the section called "Formatting for a Fresh Windows Installation" and follow steps 1-4.
4. Now, get out your Computer Recover/Install CD that came with your laptop. The factor restore CD that will restore the computer back like it was when you first got it.
5. Put the recover cd in the computer (take out the Vista CD)
6. Reboot the computer... and now boot off of the recovery CD.
7. It should guide you step by step how to install Windows.

... maybe I can find a guide from Dell....

Hmm... I was gonna check Dell support for you, but they are down.

So... let me suggest this:
* Contact free Dell support and ask them to give you instructions on how to do a "factory restore" ... how to restore Windows on your computer to the way it was when you first bought it ... where everything on your hard drive gets erased or reset back to original.
http://www.dell.com/support/contents/us/en/19/category/Contact-Information?~ck=mn

Then do that for your computer. This might solve all your problems if it was only a software issue... or it might reveal that your hardware is bad if the system keeps failing.

So I did the Factory Restore, and as I was putting my files back in the computer and the screen crashed again.

I don't know if it is related or not to the cause of the crashes but since doing the restore, and before the restore, I have been updating the drivers, but when I get to the chipsets the updates don't install, and if I go through the device manager it says my drivers are up to date but the updates I have are newer, if I try to locate the updates on my computer through the device manager it says the drivers are up to date, but it doesn't install the newer versions.

Okay, nevermind after doing some digging I found the setup files to manually install the updates.

Let me know if it still doesn't work after it's all installed. Although, at this point, I'm not sure if I can figure out the problem.

There are some other things we could probably try, but it depends on how much you want to keep trying to fix it.

It seems that your display drivers are not functioning properly. This happens due to driver incompatibility issues. It is also possible that the driver was incompletely installed or the installation was not successful due to some particular reason.

I would like you to reinstall the driver as follows:

1. Click Start.
2. Type "Device Manager" in search.
3. Hit ENTER.
4. Expand the computer name displayed as the top category on left side panel.
5. Expand your graphics/ display card.
6. Right click the driver, select "Uninstall".
7. Follow the wizard, reboot when you're done.
8. Install driver errors removal program. Scan your system and repair all errors.
9. Perform fresh installation of the appropriate driver.

It didn't work,

I tried the RegINOut that you had linked and fixed the errors but the screen is still crashing, but I did a scan with RegCure and it says there are still errors that must have been missed by RegInOut.

That's a shame. The fact that the problem continues after completely reinstalling Windows, kind of suggest we are really looking at a hardware issue.

In your first post, you said that after the screen goes blank, the sound actually starts to lag (as opposed to playing normally). Based on that and all of this, I am getting the impression that maybe the motherboard or power system or something is bad and maybe the whole computer is just going to need to be replaced.

BTW, was this correct? The sound starts to mess up after the screen goes off? If the computer continued to run fine after the screen went blank, then I might have suspected something related to the screen or power.

Anyways: here's a few things to try:

1. (disable the Quadro FX) There is a very slight chance this *might* work, so I'll list it first (although with the sound issue, I have strong doubts it will). Your motherboard might have a second graphics card: the onboard graphics. Go into the BIOS and find the setting that enables the onboard graphics ... or the one that disables the PCI Express or Quadro graphics. I do not know if this settings is available, but if it is, and if the cause is the Quadro FX graphics, then this will allow you to stop using it ... and just maybe be able to at least use the computer (with a slower graphics system). Do you need me to find how to access the BIOS for your Dell model?

2. (check battery) Remove your battery and run the computer without the battery. A long shot, but maybe the issue could be related to the battery/power system.

3. (check the display) Connect an external monitor to the HDMI or VGA port ... and, maybe, even disable the laptop screen. Then see if it shuts off the external monitor after a period of use as well (this would eliminate the cause as just being the screen).

4. If you want to send me a copy of your event log via private message, I'd be more than willing to give it one last look and see if there's anything interesting to note. Now that you have a fresh install of Windows, the problem might stick out more. Consider it a last ditch effort to see if we can figure it out before mostly giving up. :)

5. Anyways, at this point I am really leaning towards this being a core hardware issue, perhaps not worth fixing. Of course, there are other things that could be tried, but they get increasingly more complex from here on out (stuff like disassembling the computer) and less likely to actually be able to fix the problem even after making all the effort.

Disclaimer: I do not have definitely knowledge on this subject (especially as I haven't use ReglNOut), so consider what I say below as just my best assessment of the situation.

You know, I read the post, but didn't realize the link was for a registry cleaner.
I personally, would always strongly recommend that people never use an automated registry cleaner type utility. A large number of them are scamware type software. Basically, what they do is claim that you have a long list of problems with your computer (fake problems) and then claim that they have fixed those same problems (again, which were fake ones). Additionally, they may also list a number of "problems" that are not really causing any problems with the computer, but maybe are more like "litter", but will offer to change or clean them up. Many people can't believe that a person would outright lie to them like that (by listing fake problems) so are a little hesitant to believe that is really what these programs do ... but that is what they often do. I have not used the program mentioned above, but it is quite likely it does the same thing.
Interestingly enough, sometimes a person will actually run these programs and their problem goes away; sometime this actually does happen. For example (and I'm just guessing), maybe in the process of disabling things, it might disable a piece of malware too. Or in some cases (again guessing), the program might actually contain a few useful things that it removes (like maybe browser helper objects) -- this may mean they could contain a few useful things.

However, registry cleaners are not an antivirus or anti-malware program; in general, I don't think they are usually designed to truly solve the underlying cause of problems and properly fix them like an antivirus or anti-malware program might. Also, the fact that the registry cleaners often detect "fake problems" on newly installed versions of Windows, like in your case, only reinforces how risky most are.

There is another way to think about this issue. Even if a registry cleaner includes a number of legitimate features, having a program automatically mess around with your registry is generally a very bad idea. If it edits the wrong thing, it could make the computer more buggy.

In general, editing stuff in the registry cannot fix core problems with a computer. The registry is just a list of settings for various Windows features and other programs, so all it can really do is change various settings.

If you can, do a system restore to a point before you installed and ran this program; while it might not have done any harm, it is also possible it may have messed up some thing that will affect you a long ways down the road.

BTW, all registry cleaners are not scams. Consider this one: CCleaner. As far as I know that one is pretty legitimate. However, the key thing to note is that the program can't actually go around fixing problems on your computer. It only does simple stuff like: cleaning out temporary files, cookies, etc... or make it easier to customize various Windows settings (so you don't have to manually edit the registry yourself to enable those features). None of these things will fix problems with a computer; in fact, most of the stuff it does it not all that useful for most people ... so I don't actually recommend that you use CCleaner for anything as it doesn't really do much.

P.S. If you ever need to edit the registry....
There are rare situations where you may actually need to mess with the registry. In this case, I recommend the following advice: only edit the registry, when you know what the problem is (have read up on it) and have a list of the exact changes you need to make to the registry ... and then manually make the changes yourself, using regedit.

The sound continues normally for a brief moment after the screen crashes, then it lags, it plays a note/tone from the music repeatedly until I hard shutdown the computer.

Also, some more information, I left my computer running today for about 6 hours just on the desktop view with no programs running it ran without problems, it wasn't until I started using the internet that my computer crashed. I checked the event viewer their were some similar errors to before I did the restore regarding "kernel power" and other network issues, then there was a "SQLbrowser" error as well. Also, when I was re-installing driver updates my computer screen crashed but instead of black it kept flashing between black and green.

Hmm, yeah, I saw a number of networking errors. Soo... lets try something.

How do you connect to the internet?
If wirelessly, then go into device manager and disable the wireless; then use only wired.
If wired, try using only wireless....

Or, better yet, disable both wired and wireless, and then use the computer for a while.... play games, do 3d work, or stress it out somehow. In addition to wired, make sure wireless is disabled so programs don't autoupdate from the internet.

We had a usb port go bad on one laptop that caused bluescreens, so it could be related to a simple device that maybe you can just stop using (like usb or ethernet).

Glad you brought that up(and ran those tests); good catch; it's worth a try. You could even try by not using blutooth devices or usb, etc.... to see if any of those might be it.

I am trying you solution listed above regarding removing the battery an using the external monitor. I'm trying both of the at the same time to see if the battery was the issue or if it crashes, if the monitor is involved. So far I have been running for about an hour running downloads for my design software and browsing the internet, I have not had any problems yet, hopefully it stays this way.
I will update if there is a crash within the next few hours, if not is the battery issue with power management of the battery or just a bad battery?

So, I think the battery solution has worked. I have been running my computer for a few hours with no crashes with the cpu at 100% and stressing the graphics card as well.

Hmm, that would be good news (although bad that you may have to replace the battery).

If it keeps running stable like this (and then messes up once you put the battery back in), maybe you could order a new battery. There is a slight chance it could be a part leading up to your battery (in which case a new one won't help) or it may just be the battery itself.
They seem quite expensive though. Here's what one google search turned up for over $150:
http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/Total-Micro-Battery-for-the-Dell-Precision-Mobile-Workstation-M6500-Silver/2635317.aspx
and here's some cheap brand options (which may be poor quality):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007934&IsNodeId=1&srchInDesc=m6500

I spoke to soon, I thought it worked but it just crashed and the external monitor lost signal as well.
