Computer Experiences Severe Latency When Using Network

My computer slows down and experiences severe latency whenever I use the internet.

Using the internet causes severe latency on my computer. Network traffic does not significantly increase cpu usage. However, it causes severe latency that I measured by latency monitoring software. The most notable effect of this is on audio, which is extremely choppy whenever I access webpages or whenever spotify loads new content. I have all of my drivers completely up to date. I changed from the on board audio to an audio card thinking that the problem was with the audio driver. Then I switched to wireless USB network adapter and disabled the on board network driver, which decreased the frequency of the latency spikes; however, the problem still persists.

This problem is more annoying than you might expect, especially considering that I put serious money (by my standards) into upgrading this system and that I can't even enjoy youtube or spotify. Any help at all would be appreciated, thank you.

Additional System Specifications:
Compaq CQ5110Y
64 bit windows 10
Kingston SUV400S3712 SCSI
AMD Phenom 9500 Quad Core 2.2 GHz
6BG RAM
SB Audigy Audio Card + integrated realtek alc888S Audio (I'm not currently using the integrated audio, which is disabled)
GeForce GTS 250 setup for dual monitors
PCI-SV92EX Soft Modem
150 Mbs Wireless 802.11b/g/n Nano USB Adaptor
NOTE: I had the same problem with the default built-in Realtek RTL8201N 100Mb/s 10-Base-T Ethernet so it probably has more to do with networking in general and not the particular networking card/adapter.

Hello thexplex

The issue might be with the router, network drivers, or the junk files in your PC itself.

To start with, you can try running an efficient anti-virus program like Kaspersky or Malwarebytes. If the program fails to detect the issue, running some Windows performance utility like Ccleaner or Ashampoo WinOptimizer might be helpful.

If the problem persists, please check if the NIC drivers are up-to-date. By updating the drivers I mean downloading the drivers manually from the vendor's official website, and not updating them from the Device Manager snap-in as sometimes Windows fails to update the drivers from there.

You may also want to download and install the graphics and audio drivers manually to confirm you have their latest version installed.

Although it is unlikely that the browser is obsolete, checking it for any available updates may do the trick as well.

If all of the above suggestion fail to work, please check and confirm if your router requires firmware update.

Feel free to report back if the issue is still not fixed, and you need further assistance in this.

Cheers!! :)

Hi viveknayyar007, thank you for your reply.

I tried doing an antivirus scan, and I made sure my network drivers are up to date by manually searching online and verifying that I have the current version. However, I haven't tried doing the same for my audio and graphics drivers. The problem does not have to do with my web browser since I have the same computer latency or non-browser downloads and on Spotify. I also haven't checked my router's firmware yet, but I installed my router about a year ago, and so I assume its almost up to date.

I am in the process of trying two things. I am going to try an SFC scan and I am going to try and reinstall my network driver in compatibility mode. If anything works or if I find something out I will keep this thread updated. Thank you for your support. :)

Hi again viveknayyar007,

I have tried your solutions and unfortunately they did not solve my problem. I am going to need additional assistance. Here is an updated list of things I have tried already.

- updating all of my computer's drivers
- downgrading various drivers in compatibility mode, including my network driver
- updating drivers manually
- doing a systems file check
- changing to a different network card
- antivirus scans including an avast antivirus boot scan and a malwarebytes scan
- updated my internet browsers

However, I have yet to check that my router is up to date. How do I do that?

Thanks for your time.
