I have an asus laptop that is now 3 years old. It has never been the best computer, but it has done its job.

Recently however my laptop forgot my mouse entirely. I have a wireless Tecknet mouse that has worked well with the computer for over a year. I added new batteries and tried again with no luck. I tried a different wireless mouse with no luck. Both of the mice work on other laptops too. When I look in device manager the mouse seems to be completely gone. And when I plug the USB chip in no message pops up asking to add the device etc.

Sounds like your receiver is busted, but to be sure you'll need another PC and another USB device.
Try another USB device that you know to work in the laptop in question. A flash drive, keyboard whatever. Try all of the USB ports this way.
Try your mouse in another computers USB port that you know works.
If the mouse works in the other PC and the other USB device does not work with your laptop its the laptops fault.
If the mouse does not work but the other USB device does, it's the mous' fault.

My mouse works with other laptops, so it is the laptop and not the mouse, as for other USB devices I can try, but my apple cord never worked with it anyway, so I will have to use a flash drive and then get back to you.
