Question Computer freezes and cpu goes to 97% use on certain games

Hi, randomly and only on certain games my computer starts to freeze up. The game goes to about 5fps and my computer freezes. Until I close the game. This happens at random intervals, maybe after 30 minutes of playing or 4 hours. I noticed it happened a lot on rust, blackops 4, apex legends, and some others. I noticed that the cpu usage will be at 97% when this happens. I cannot find a fix anywhere, I ran a bench mark through performance and all of my parts seemed fine. I am running on windows 10. Here is my specs:

GTX 970
intel i7-6700k
Corsair 16gb ram
asus z170-a lga 1151 ddr4 motherboard
corsair 850w power supply

Many games will cause 4c/8t cpus to be at/near 100% usage, so that alone is not really significant, nor does it imply cause/effect.

Let's first see if your temps are seemingly under control.

Install/run HWMonitor, which will allow real time monitoring of core clock speeds, core and package temps, core voltage, etc...

Then install/ run Intel Extreme Tuning Utility, select "Stress Test" , and then "CPU Stress Test", and then click on 'Start Testing"...(default 5 minutes is fine, or you can run it 10 minutes to simulate a gaming load)

Note temps achieved while test is running; if 65-75C, temps are not an issue. If temps hit 100C, you are throttling due to cooling (lack thereof).

Is your CPU overclocked?

Is your cpu cooler a conventional sink/fan, or a fluid pumper/AIO affair just 'waiting to fail'? (Bias alert!)

If all that looks ok, with no browser open, no scans or downloads occurring, etc.,what CPU usage is being displayed in task manager? (my own 7700K with all-core turbo of 4.5 GHz hovers around 1-2%, and 3% with Tom's Hardware Forum open.)

I ran the stress test for 5 minutes and the highest cpu temp recorded was 71C. My cpu is not over clocked, and I have a corsair H60 cpu cooler. With just browsers opened about 5% of the cpu is being used.
