Computer freezes at random when doing low to idle CPU usage tasks

Hi,

This is my second time writing this due to it happening again

I just built a new desktop for myself and ever since i first plugged it in it would freeze at random when doing low to idle CPU usage tasks. If I was gaming or doing heavy loaded stuff it wouldn't happen.

When the freezing occurs it would be randomly from 5 minutes to an hour and a half. The screen would glitch out and the only way to fix it is to hard reboot the computer.

I have already tried reinstalling Windows 10 and taking out the CPU and RAM but it still happens. Do I have a bad mobo/CPU/RAM????

My Specs are:
Intel i5-6400
ASrock H110M-DGS
8gb Crucial DDR4 RAM
1tb HDD
500W PSU

Solution

Is the sleep state result in the powercfg command prompt command stating it's off?

Try changing your power settings from the default 5% min 100%max to 75%min 100%max. If that clears things up, it's almost 100% a PSU issue. If not, updating your BIOS again should be the first thing on your list.

Antec VP500P V2

As there's no clear answer to what's the problem you can try monitoring your CPU clock and usage. If the usage goes to 0% when your PC freezes it may be a faulty CPU. Most of the time PC freezing is a CPU or GPU problem. From what I can see you didn't mentioned a GPU, are you using the integrated graphics on the i5? If yes it's most certainly a CPU problem.

I am using integrated graphics . So this is a CPU problem and not a motherboard one or RAM. And how come this happens when I am only doing low to idle cpu tasks and not High load ones

That PSU is certainly a problem. Although Antec says it's "haswell compatible", there are zero reviews on it. What we do know is that it's an FSP 500W unit WITHOUT certifications (bronze, gold ,etc), using independent 5/3v (rather than DC-DC converter). Most of those units are NOT haswell compatible and will freeze during idle.

To test, go to the BIOS and disable C states. If that helps, buy a new, decent PSU.

There's no reason for it causing problems when doing low load tasks. To eliminate every other hardware, it's either a problem with your CPU itself or its integrated graphics. If it was a RAM problem your computer wouldn't even boot. Same goes for the PSU. Same goes for your OS drive, same goes for your motherboard. If you could try a friend's CPU that would clear things out but you have to remove your cooler, clean the thermal paste, put your friend's CPU in, apply new thermal paste and put the cooler back. It's a hassle but it would clear things out.

You're the man dude will keep this updated

Will test and post results
