Question Computer freezes.

Hi everyone!

First of all I wasn't sure which forum this belonged in so sorry if it should be elsewhere.

I have a problem that started about 2-3 months ago though it's starting to feel like forever. Initially it all started a while after I upgraded from win 8.1 to windows 10.

The first thing was my power supply up and died one night so I purchased a new one from the guy I buy my computers from. A few weeks later the next power supply died which we think was caused by an electricity surge. (this no doubt has nothing to do with my current problem but I thought I would be thorough). So I buy another power supply. Not too long after that I was suddenly plagued with the BSOD constantly. So after weeks of trying any fix that I came across on the internet I gave up and sent my computer to my tech guy. After about 10 days of fiddling with it he said that my ram was faulty and needed to be replaced. About 10 days later he says that the ram is in but it now looks like the motherboard is faulty also. So then we had to get a new motherboard as well as the ram and then it turns out we may as well get a new case as he was having difficulties getting a motherboard to fit the old case. I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to computer these days so I don't have any choice but to trust what people are telling me. So 3 weeks after sending the computer off I get my new one back with the only original components being hard drive, graphics card and dvd player. For 3 hours I was in heaven, happily gaming once again. Then up start the BSOD's again. Computer goes back to the technician and apparantly I got a bad batch of ram and he has to order a new lot. 2 weeks later I get my computer back and for a few hours it worked and then I got 1 bsod and then it seemed to be okay for a few days. Well yes I did seem to get rid of the bsod's but now my computer just freezes and I can't do anything except to shut it down with the off button or reset it. The thing is it only seems to freeze when I am playing a game and it can be any game. Tonight I have been trying to play 7 Day To Die on a server we just rented and over a period of around 4 hours it froze at least 7 times. The weird thing is it seems freeze more with online games than single player.

I was going to buy a new graphics card as I thought that might be the problem and in fact spent some time in this forum recently being guided by a very helpful peson named Yuka. I still intend to upgrade my graphics card but thought this problem needed to be sorted out first. I realised last night I could test out the card by simply swapping with my daughter as she also has the gtx970 and that might give me some idea. Well either it is not the graphics card or they both have the same error because I now have my daughters card and nothing has changed and her computer is running just fine with my card in it.

The only hardware left is the hard drive but I have done a few different tests on it and they showed nothing wrong with it.

I just don't know what to do anymore. I am so desperate I am considering putting win 8.1 back on as I never had these problems when I was running 8.1...is that worth a try?

There is something that I am wondering if it could be causing these problems. I use a wireless connection and at times my internet just drops off and I have to either reconnect manually or remove and then resplace the wireless ...thingy..adapter (I'm sure you know what I mean :) I even went and bought a new and better one just in case. As I said I am getting desperate here...but I had more trouble staying connected with that one than my original so I put the old one back in.

Just trying to think of what else I have tried...Oh I also ran a temperature program to keep an eye on the graphics card but whenever I looked at it while playing a game it was fine. Of course when the computer freezes up I can't check to see but I did task down and check at different intervals while playing.

Okay I know that was very long winded and anyone who got down this far is probably about to fall asleep but I wanted to give as much information as I could even if some of it may not be relevant. If anyone out there has any ideas on how I can find out what is wrong with my computer I would be so so grateful.

System specs:
Processor - Intel(R)Core(TM)i7-8700 CPU @ 3.20GHz 3.19 GHz
Installed RAM - 32.0 GB
Graphics Card - NVidia GeForce GTX-970

Kind regards
Carol

Is system model what you wanted? I couldn't find anything that mentioned motherboard but did a search on the internet and it pointed me in that direction. As mentioned I am a novice when it comes this sort of thing. It also says that the baseboard manufacturer is Gigabyte Technology.

System Model: H310M S2P 2.0

Let me know if this is not what you are looking for.

Just an update:

Computer froze after playing 7dtd for about 15 minutes but this time I waited before closing down as the light showing the computer is working was still flashing so I waited to see what happened. 10 seconds later the computer rebooted to the bsod with the following error:

DPC Watchdog Violation.

I did a seach for that particular error and found a post from from this forum on how to fix this. https://www.tomshardware.com/news/how-to-fix-dpc-watchdog-violation-windows-10,36200.html
As it turns out I already had Standard SATA AHCI Controller installed and after doing an update driver it said I had the the best one installed.

Something else we tried is I am now connected to the internet via ethernet rather than wireless but apart from my web pages now loading much quicker it didn't help with the freezing problem.

I can't think of anything else to try right at this moment so I will just wait and see if anyone out there can help me.

That is your motherboard, the Gigabyte H310M S2P 2.0.

If you go to "Control Panel > Device Manager" do you see any yellow warning signs?

To answer your original question there isn't any reason you can't go back to using Windows 8.1 if you prefer it over Windows 10, but i don't think your operating system is the problem. The problem is more likely with your video drivers. My suggestion would be to do a clean install of your GTX 970 drivers. That means completely remove all your current drivers and settings using DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller), then reinstall the latest drivers for your video card. Just follow the instructions from the short 7 minute video below.

I completed the above steps and it was actually looking pretty hopeful there for a while. The computer lasted 1 hour 50 mins before it crashed though, as it did in an earlier crash it didn't completely freeze like it does most times. It was frozen but the computer was still working and after about 10 seconds it rebooted to the BSOD screen with the same message as before, DPC Watchdog Violation. But that was the longest I have been able to play, generally lasts between 15-30 minutes.

Anyway I do appreciate the help and I'm crossing my fingers that you may have something else I can try. 🤞

Here's a tutorial from the main Tom's Hardware website - How To Fix The 'DPC Watchdog Violation' Windows 10 Error. They suggest updating the "IDE ATA/ATAPI controller" in Device Manager.

https://www.tomshardware.com/news/how-to-fix-dpc-watchdog-violation-windows-10,36200.html

Also if you use AVG antivirus, according to some users, after turning off/disabling AVG antivirus software, this BSOD error no longer occurs.

I did what was suggested in the tutorial regarding the watchdog error and I haven't had any bsod problems since just freezing issues. Over the past couple of days the freezing seemed to have slowed down a lot it now looks to be starting up again. I got into 7dtd a short time ago and it only lasted about 10 minutes before it froze.

I did try disabling AVG a couple of times. After the first time the computer rebooted but itself (no freezing) and the second time it just froze.

I'm sure I mentioned this in an earlier message but the computer never freezes in the just normal stuff like web browsing, watching YouTubes etc, It is only when playing games.

Thanks for the new suggestions at least that keeps the hope alive as I am so frustrated and have no idea what to do to solve this problem.

You have not mentioned what drives you have in your system.
Have you tried looking in Windows Event Viewer for clues on what the problem may be?

I am assuming you mean what hard drives I have, if so then it is the following:

Seagate ST2000VX003 2TB SATA Hard Drive

I looked at the event viewer and from what I can tell this is what comes up around the same time that the computer freezes:

Error Volmgr 46 11:13:33 PM
Critical Kernel-Power 41 11:13:37 PM

From what I read when i searched for the Kernel-Power 41 that is just saying that my computer shut down/rebooted without going through the required motions. The Volmgr 46 seems to relate to the same thing. So from what I can gather those 2 things are telling me that my computer shutdown/restarted incorrectly which I already know but where do I look to find the reason that it did that?

Do you think reinstalling windows could solve anything?

Reinstalling Windows may fix the problem, i can't say one way or the other. The only downside is that it would be a lot of work to get your system back the way you like it.

Take a look at the article below "Fix computer freezes when playing games". It's partly an advertisement for Driver Easy software but they give some useful tips as well. Try Method 3 and 6.

That's funny, I was just at that website looking for some insight. I have already done the 2 methods you recommended a few days back but I just did them again. The system checker did have errors this time round but they couldn't be fixed till I booted in safe mode. They were all files that were to do with Defender. Anyway after all that I went back into the game, lasted 25 minutes but this time the computer just suddenly rebooted, no freezing at all. I went back into the game but this time I only last 5 minutes before doing the same thing and I wasn't even on the computer at the time. Went to make a coffee and came back to the computer in mid reboot.

I went back into the event viewer and found something that I hadn't picked up before. There was an error for and application popup and it was relating to a file called Alpham164.sys. I found through a search that this file is related to my keyboard which is a Steelseries Merc. Apparently Microsoft disabled it after one of their updates and the manufactures no longer support the keyboard as it is no longer being sold. This really sucks as there is no other keyboard out there that has layout this one does and as I have arthritis in my hands this keyboard has been a lifesaver. Anyway that is besides the point....just needed to vent a little there 😉 If I remove the keyboard and then plug it back in a part of the keyboard doesn't work the way it is supposed to and I have to reboot to get it working properly. I hadn't really thought about it till I saw that Alpham164.sys come up in the event viewer. I am wondering if that could cause my computer to crash/reboot.

The only spare keyboard I have is another of the steelseries ones so I can't test it out till tomorrow but thought I'd let you know where things are at right now.

Got to tell you I am sooo sick of my computer....

Well I ended up installing win 8.1 to see if that would fix things but now the computer is only lasting up to 5 minutes when playing 7dtd. Looks like there is nothing else left to try so I am sending it to the technician tomorrow. I did realise though that I have only been playing these games online so I decided to try 7dtd single player. I was still playing 30 minutes later so it looks like it only happens when I am on a server...kind of weird.

Anyway just thought I'd let you know and to say thanks for at least trying to help me with my problem.

Cheers
Carol
