Computer keeps crashing

I put together my first computer a few months ago, and it has been working as expected most of the time. It has always had a problem of completely not responding when closing a full screen game, stuck on the black loading screen you get for a moment while it switches to the desktop, but that hasn't been much of a problem lately. It seemed to do it to only certain games though, so I'm not sure it's a related issue. What has started to become a major problem is random freezing when I'm not using much CPU power, like reading a web article. It never does it when I'm in game or streaming a movie, or even when I'm running Prime95 or a similar program. First the screen becomes unresponsive, then the mouse, then if I have Pandora on, it starts to make an odd buzzing sound in my headphones. I have to force the computer to shut down at times like these, which i know may cause corruption and may just be why it's doing this more often. I'm not sure if Windows is behind this or if I have some setting that could fix this, but any help would be much appreciated seeing as I'm starting some online college classes and I will probably be in the middle of a test when this happens again.

My specs:
AMD FX-8320 (not overclocked)
Asus M5 A97 R2.0
AMD Radeon R7 260x
8GB RAM
1TB HDD
Windows 8.1 64Bit Enterprise Evaluation free trial

P.S.
The computer froze twice while writing this, but doesn't at all when I stream a two hour movie or play Skyrim for 10 hours.

The bios is the newest one, the one that was factory set up on it, version 1903. It is the AMD version I believe, I haven't messed with the bios at all. I don't know much about overclocking so I'm not sure what the dram and ram controller voltage should be set to. What could possibly cause this? I really need to fix or this $800 computer will be a brick of junk.
