My computer just randomly makes these whirring noises that are similar to the noise a dvd player makes when it spins the disk. However, not only have I not put a disk in, I don't even have a dvd or blu ray player. For some reason it is amplified and can be heard through my speakers or when I'm using my headphones in them, but not when I plug it into the case. Also, it should be noted that if I dont use my speakers the noise can still be heard from the case itself. The sound can last anywhere from 1 second to 10 seconds and has no apparent pattern. Sometimes it will stop and make another noise within 5 seconds and sometimes I won't hear it for half an hour. My computer is around three years old.

Solution
Maybe a fan is malfunctioning? Did you try to clean your computer? I know it might seem dumb to suggest this, but sometimes that is all it took for me.
