UPDATE: So my computer had restarted itself and the chkdsk restarted...PC booted up fine. However, some programs aren't working anymore and I can't find a way around it. For example, my Norton antivirus automatically boots up and then tries to install an update, but then it says "Installation Failed". League of Legends and Norton Utilities give me an error '48' Ping(something).dll. And idk what to do now. I'm thinking of just restoring the whole computer. No important files were on there anyways aside from games. Any tips before I go through with this
Hello!!
So a few months ago, I built a PC for gaming. Since then, it's been pretty good with one exception: sometimes it would freeze out of nowhere. Like I could be watching Twitch and the computer just randomly locks up (and delivers a really loud noise in my headphones), or I could be playing a game or just be idle, and the PC just freezes. No BSOD and I can't do anything, so I have to power it off through the power button. I couldn't figure out the issues. I checked every single driver possible for all my devices (the motherboard, graphics card, etc.) to see if there were updates and I updated everything to the max, including all the OS updates. Still didn't fix the problem.
So I tried running CHKDSK. Not through command line (although I probably should've), but I was thinking maybe it was my HDD. CHKDSK has been running for awhile now and I'm a bit concerned that my computer locked up again...
I ran the test around 3 PM PST. It got to stage 5 (although, what concerns me is that it's at stage 5 but only 20 percent complete). But it's already 5:36 PM PST and I noticed that the 20 percent nor any of the numbers for the "free clusters" had changed for a good 20-30 mins by now.
I'm worried because I'm not sure if it's safe to hard reboot the PC or not since I'm not in command line and can't cancel the operation. Idk how long this is supposed to take, but I noticed that the HDD light isn't even on anymore. Before it was blinking, then it was solid red, now it's completely off (and it's been off for 20-30 mins now). So I'm worried about what to do...Should I just leave it running still? Does the fact that there's no light on the HDD activity monitor mean that my computer is frozen? Does it take extremely long since it's a 1TB hard drive?
I noticed that my controller that is plugged in is still on, but my mouse has no light on it. Does that mean it's still running and I shouldn't cancel? The fans are still running and there is no noise coming from the HDD (no sounds that I have googled). It sounds like it usually does...Idk what I did wrong with this PC...Please help! D:
My build:
MBO: MSI 760GMA-P34(FX)
CPU: AMD FX 6300
GFX: Sapphire Radeon R9 270X
HDD: Western Seagate 1 TB
RAM: 8GB DDR3-1600
OS: Windows 7 x64 Professional
