My computer has started to randomly restart whether it be i am working on an essay for school or if im gaming. The restarts occur ever other hour or so. I am assuming it is a power issue and I have had my corsair cx 500 for 3-4 years. Is it most likely the psu going bad?

-Update: Problem is still consisting with new psu(Corsair cx 650m). I am moitoring tempatures of all components and no temps to worry about. All the fans on my computer will rev up above normal when it does the random restart, not sure why. Please help!!!

Oh, the horror! It's becoming increasingly difficult to diagnose frequent reboot because the various fixes for Meltdown and Spectre are causing exactly that sort of problem on a wide variety of computers.

The most important thing you can do, and do it first, is to make sure you have the very latest version of your OS (I'm assuming Win10 here). You should do this at least once a day: settings->Update & Security->Windows Update->Check for updates

This will keep your OS and drivers up to date. The only possible exception to this is if you have a discreet video card (GPU): you should go to the manufacturer's website (NVidia, Radeon, etc) and get and install the latest driver for your GPU.

Once you have done that, you can better begin to trouble shoot your problem.

I am up to date as far as windows 10 and gpu drivers. Also tried new power supply, and ran the widows memory diagnostics to see if the defective ram may of caused it. Test said memory was fine and yet once or twice a day my computer randomly restarts still. Its not a huge deal I am just worried it is bad for my computer.

Which other psu?
Which motherboard are you using? For an almost total system overview (except psu),

download hwinfo32,
install and open it=click run,
close the top window which is the system summary,
in the main window at the left top click "save report",
at the bottom of the next window check "short text report",
after that you'll see what's in the pc,
copy by clicking "copy to clipboard" and rightclick+paste in your next respons

Also I do not know if this is a coincidence but since I changed power supplies the problem is less frequent but still happens.

where would I check for latest firmware?
Also the most recent time it shut off when it rebooted windows said it repaired my C: drive (the ssd) not sure if that means windows found the problem and fixed it, but it has never done it previous times it restarts.

Check thermal paste and/or pads under the heatsinks on the motherboard and replace it if necessary this helped fix my friends pc with the same issue since the thermal paste under his south bridge heatsink turned into cement.

I found this error in my event viewer do you think this could be it. It appears in event viewer right around every time my computer restarts. The error source is WHEA-Logger and says "A fatal hardware error has occurred." The source of the error is AMD Northbridge which i presume is the CPU. To be exact it says:
A fatal hardware error has occurred.

Component: AMD Northbridge
Error Source: Machine Check Exception
Error Type: 11
Processor APIC ID: 0

The northbridge allows the memory, cpu, pci, and southbridge to all communicate with eachother but idk u could pull the heatsink off of the vrm which is closest to the rear io and check the condition of the the thermal pads as it could be overheating causing the sytem to shutdown

This is a territory I am completely unfamiliar with. I dont understand how anything could be overheating. Sometimes the restart occurs after a couple minutes after startup.... could anything overheat that quickly?

I tried changing thermal paste about a week ago and again it has been shutting off but very infrequently. I dont know if it could be my cpu fan not working as well then. Bios is up to date.

Some time has pased by,but had this one still open. You still have problems? I looked at the next and realized i didn't say anything about it,

It's a small deviation,but set this to 200.

I see that the ram isn't running at rated specs, did you try enabling AMP/DOCP (if there) in the bios, maybe it will give some stability. Could help that by setting the voltage for the ram, after AMP/DOCP enabled, to 1.65V if not at that.
Might well be that this cpu with four sticks will only run 1333mhz,but worth trying the rated specs.
Above steps need to be done in the bios.

The thing is on the bios screen it does say that the ram is at 13333 mhz so not sure which number is correct I will try enabling AMP.DOCP
