when did you install the second sound card?? if you have two and left the onboard sound it can cause the pc to lock up randomly. one thing i would try right now is open the side case panel. one issue when your tech pc is a tech will take the side panel off and leave it off. this can keep a pc cool and keep it from over heating. if the pc stops locking up..you may have a part that having a temp issue. sometime the old tricks...hair dryer set on warm...blowing around the ps or into a case can heat up a chip that has a heat issue.

Sigh...I was almost finished writing a message when I had a reboot and lost it...

Anyway, I realized that the reason I wasn't getting sound when I disabled Realtek was that I was forgetting to move my headphone from the audio input on the motherboard to the audio input on the sound card.

So here is what I ended up testing:

1. Disabled Realtek (this is on my motherboard) in Device Manager. Plugged headphones into the sound card so was running ASUS Xonar DX soundcard. Unfortunately, computer still rebooted.

2. Enabled Realtek in Device Manager. Disabled ASUS Xonar DX soundcard. Plugged headphones into motherboard. Unfortunately, computer still rebooted.

I think this means that this isn't a problem with the sound card....

I did investigate that there have been a few updates during the past couple of months to the BIOS. I assume I only have to download the most recent? I'm not sure how to update the BIOS but I'm sure there are instructions either in the motherboard manual that I have or on the ASUS web page. Will try that next.

I disabled in only in device manager. Did make whichever one was enabled the default. How do I disable in the bios menu?

Also -- this may be entirely coincidental -- but twice in the last hour my screen went briefly black and then recovered and I had a message that the Nvidia display driver has stopped responding and has recovered. I remember I had that once several months ago. Bear in mind, though, that the video drivers were freshly installed and updated when I put in the new SSD earlier this week so it isn't that the drivers aren't up to date.

I think the problem may be solved. In WoW, I switched it from using DX9 to DX11. To my surprise, I have not rebooted since I did that 3 days ago. It surprised me because people having problems are usually told to switch from DX11 to DX9 (which is why I never thought the fact I was using DX9 was a problem...)

I just wanted to add that I am experiencing the same exact issue as the OP. I also play WoW (mentioned in the thread)

Give me a bit and i'll post my system specs.

On second thought should I post a separate thread? (I also changed it to X11 on the advise of the post a few up.

FWIW, after going to DX11 my problem went away for about 5 days and then came back. I am at a loss as to what is going on. I did look at the WoW official forums and found several people with vague, similar complaints. There didn't seem to be a lot similar with how each was solved (or what didn't work). The only common element that I saw was that when solved it usually involved various changes to video settings...but no common factor. So not really sure where to go with it.

Just to make sure it wasn't WoW doing it I deleted my Cache, WTF and addons folders and repaired WoW -- I then ran it with no addons at all. It made no difference, still rebooted. It isn't doing it as much as it used to, but still happens every day.

Just to follow up on this. After I last posted I continued to have the problem intermittently although it was better.

So the other day I was using the computer, left the room, and a little while later the UPS (UPS is less than 2 months old) started screeching. Came in and found the computer totally dead. I was at home so know that the power to the house didn't go out. This was something internal to the computer.

Based upon the fact the computer was dead, decided to replace the power supply. Replaced the power supply and computer immediately powered on but wouldn't boot. Having exhausted my capabilities, I took it in to the shop (we've moved so not the shop that built it). They verified that the power supply was connected properly and had the same problem and set it aside to work on it the next morning.

The next morning they called and told us (1) the new power supply was dead and (2) a connector to the hard drive bays was broken. That connector was a proprietary Thermaltake connector so Thermaltake was contacted to send a new one.

Days pass and connector was received. Now get a call that the good news is that with the connector put it and a new power supply they think they get my computer to work again. However, all SATA cables need to be replaced and both of my optical drives and both my hard drives are dead. I had my OS and some programs on an SSD drive (a new larger one that I just bought in June) and the other programs and data on a 1 TB HDD. The comment was that the HDD would not spin up.

Supposedly the motherboard is fine.

A few years ago I had a desktop computer go dead after the power went out in the house (this was pre having a UPS) and over a period of 18 months I had to replace virtually many parts in the computer as each slowly failed. I said I would never do that again.

Obviously by the time I replace the power supply, the cables, both optical drives, the SSD drive and the HDD I am looking at serious money. So, I will probably just replace the computer.

yeah agreed... do you have the funds at your disposal just too buy a new computer(sorry I forgot if you work or not[so young])

also yeah it sounds like the computer got fried by the ups dieing... I do recommend you get a new computer because i think that would satisfy you the most after this horrible experience with computers... also if you do end up getting a new computer what will you build it for gaming or what?

I am going to get a computer. I think I am getting a Falcon Northwest Tiki....I really, really like the small form factor since my desk is not very deep. The other option is a Velocity Micro Raptor. The Tiki's negative is mostly I think that you can't put a second video card in it and you can't do much upgrades but neither of those are important to me.
