Computer Restarting while gaming with Sapphire HD 7870

Hey guys.. i'm having a bit of an issue here which is really annoying me.. my pc runs fine, just built it.
Mobo: Asus m5a78lm usb3
CPU: FX 6300
PSU: Corsair VS550
GPU: Sapphire hd 7870 oc edition
Ram: 2x4gb Gskill Ripjaws

I have everything running stock, no overclocking at all. But when i play any game (mainly bf4) the computer sound loops and restarts after a couple of minutes max. I've found that if i downclock my gpu to the non oc settings (50mhz lower on both clock and memory) it works fine. that's one thing that annoys me. The other is that i can overclock the gpu both clocks up about 200mhz extra and run furmark and it passes with flying colours.. i've even tried aida64 stress testing all hardware at the same time and again, it passes with flying colours. Temperatures are fine and everything.. Could anyone enlighten me as to why my computer resets during games at factory oc settings on my gpu but works fine if i downclock 50mhz?

oh, i've also done memtest and my ram is fine.. and i've run 24 hour prime and cpu passed..

I think it has something to do with the PSU, try to borrow one from someone to test.

oh and i'll also add that this wasn't happening previously when i was running an hd 7750 with some shitty 350w psu.. i upgraded the gpu to the hd 7870 and psu to the vs550 at the same time.. so i'm thinking it has to be one of them.. i've tried several different graphics card drivers also to no avail

hmmm.. i actually have noone i could borrow a psu from to test your theory lonewolf... any reason why you think it may be the psu?

Did you check your drivers? My guess, your drivers got messed up from something. uninstall them in safe mode (First download the latest drivers, and put it in your C: drive so you'll know where they are after you uninstalled) and install the latest drivers from AMD.

i've done that daniel... i've uninstalled them.. run ccleaner.. then driversweeper in safe mode.. then installed the new drivers.. i've tried that with several different drivers whether they be official or beta.. still doesn't work

That's good, so nothing to do with the software. Like others who said, it's prolly your PSU. If you're overclocking it, you might be maxing its cap. Or it's just a bad PSU.

but why do the crashes stop if i down clock the gpu to the original speeds instead of factory oc.. it's only a measly 50mhz..

and also if it's the psu.. why wouldn't it happen when i stress test every bit of hardware simultaneously.. that would surely be using more power than a game.. when i use aida64 it's stressing all components at 100% but the computer doesnt reset then.. only in games

You're probably correct in this assumption. I would suspect the video card since it does work when you downclock it. It's just not stable at its factory oc setting. I would RMA it if it is under warrenty.

That is not a trusted PSU, it may break under load. And did you tried the GPU on any other system, just to check, if its running fine there or not.

i'll have to see if i can find someone system to test it on.. if not, for now i'll just continue using with the downclock.. there's not much performance drop (if any).. if i can't find another system to test on i'll just wait a bit, save up some cash and buy a better gpu and psu.. that should do the trick haha.. thanks for your help.. it's not under warranty so i can't rma it.. and don't really want to fork out some cash on a psu when it might not even be the problem.. but still i just can't understand why it works fine, heavily overclocked, when stress testing.. as i said.. i stress tested with my cpu, fpu, ram, hard disk and gpu (overclocked).. and it was fine 6 hours in...

ok i've narrowed something down.. i can run furmark with my graphics card heavily overclocked.. it runs fine for over an hour.. if i then simultaneously run aida64 stress testing my cpu, fpu and system memory, while stressing the graphics card, it restarts the computer.. so basically, i can stress test every single component and they all pass the test.. but as soon as i stress test the cpu etc with aida 64, and the gpu with furmark.. it restarts.. i'm now leaning towards this being a psu problem.. would you agree? if so, what psu would you recommend.. my budget is a bit of an issue.. i'd basically like the best most suitable psu for the lowest price.. also if you disagree that it is the psu then please say so.. but i'm no expert, but seeing as though all hardware can be stress tested alone, but not all together, leads me to believe some sort of power issue is at hand..

I also have the same power supply, but never dare to oc both my cpu and gpu. Its been solid so far no problem whatsoever. If it's the psu then get a Seasonic PSU. You can have a look at Seasonic S12 620W non modular or the M12 620 w modular.

I had this issue with my HD7750, changing the power supply fixed the problem and has not returned in 9 months. I hope the new PSU helps.

well.. i installed the new power supply.. it allowed me to play with my gpu at stock values.. but i've now found a quite peculiar fix.. i lowered the voltage on my card from 12.1v to 11.8v and now i'm able to overclock the card from 1000/1200 to 1200/1350... is that not a bit weird? i found that when i had stock voltage or even raised the voltage the computer would crash with that oc.. but once i lowered the voltage it works fine... so i can't complain because it's up and running fine now.. but would anyone have any reason as to why that's the case.. could it be that i'm not using the best motherboard? asus m5a78l-m/usb3?

even with the voltage raised to 1.250-1.3v.. the gpu temps don't go above 70 as i just replaced the thermal paste on it (thought i might as well since i installed an aftermarket cpu cooler)..
