Computer says i have an perfect connection, but i cant use it...

so recently i had a storm knock out my internet and my Ethernet cables wouldn't work anymore even though my internet was on, because other computers in the house were using it just fine. so i went out and bought a NETGEAR N wireless USB adapter and it now is picking up our wireless single perfectly and says im connected to the internet

but NONE of my programs that use internet are working and if i try to run a diagnostic i get this error:

"Your computer appears to be correctly configured, but the
device or resource (www.microsoft.com) is not responding"

the drivers for the adapter are up to date (freshly installed)

this problem seems so weird , help please! :(

ill also add the i have pinged google multiple times and always recieve 4 out of 4 pings so i am REALLY connected, i just dont understand how NONE of my programs that use itnernet arent working

games,browsers, utilities none pick up the internet that im getting

What is the issue, is this the only computer not working with the internet or all of them are not? Go to the router config page, what is showing up on the WAN port for IP and DNS? It should be an external address from the modem. If that is correct, see if the computer works when plugged directly into the modem. You may need to reset the modem if no computers can get online.

we have 3 computers in the house , the other 2 work perfectly one is wireless like me and one is plugged directly, i USED to be plugged directly until it stopped working. i even took the cable that was working on the directly plugged in computer and put it in mine, and it still didnt work. so i bought a wireless adpater and hooked it up. now my computer says it has a connection but i still cant use it.

im not very savoy with computer so how would i check the WAN port for IP and DNS?

i already know it doesnt work if plugged directly to the modem, in fact it worse cause i dont get a connection at all unlike wireless where it at least says im connected

and i already reset the modem, but its just my computer that wont work

If the other computers work, you don't need to check the WAN port.

Run this command at a dos prompt: ipconfig /flushdns hit enter
Then: Nbtstat -RR, hit enter

Also check to make sure your don't have a proxy server entered in your web browser if you don't need it.

so... you can ping www.tomshardware.com and get 4 responses that do Not time out?

BUT

when you open Internet Explorer you do not get your home page? even if you enter settings and change your homepage to something else? or manually enter a url?

i can ping any site and it says:

Packets: sent=4, received=4, lost=0 (0% lost)

but NONE of my browsers work or anything that uses internet at all

in fact the only thing that works oddly enough is when i select the option to update drivers online..it actually searches online...(but their all up to date anyway)

I know you've said you have "reset" the modem etc. Try unplugging the power from both the router and modem. Leave them both off for aprox 2 minutes. First plug in the modem, after it comes up lights etc "let it complete it's start up process" then plug in the router. Be sure modem first then router. Also check what hang-the-9 said and check to make sure you don't have a proxy or static ip configured on the computer that is unable to get internet access.

Thre are other computer connecting and working through the same equipment - doing what you suggest will not fix his problem - his problem is with his computer, not the network

we dont have a router, our modem is kinda an "all in one" deal, and i have reset it multiple times but ill try it again for longer

i also checked and my browsers have "no proxy"selected, but its not just my broswer its almost ANYTHING on my computer that uses internet that wont pick up the connection i apparently have

well thats the browser i use already is firefox... no worky, i have tried IE too , no better

and again its not only my browser that isnt working. if i open steam for example it says it cant connect

or if i open any game like diablo 3, it cant connect

its like my computer is saying it has great internet but all my programs are blind to its existence

Actually it could have.. Just step 1 in troubleshooting. Ive had numerous occasions on home networks where all computers but one or two could access the internet and a simple power cycle has done the job. For whatever reason sudden power losses cause issues. But not here to argue merely trying to help.

@op Did you check proxy/static ip settings? Also when you check ipconfig does everything look proper.. Getting an IP addy, Default gateway etc?

downlaoded , reinstalled, did nothing. im on a desktop im not very good with parts but my computer is a cyberpower computer from about 3 years ago, i the device manager under computer it says "ACPI x64- based PC" and my processor is a "AMD phenom II 4x 955 3.20 GHz"

i dont have a proxy set up if thats what you mean and my IP looks just like the other computers who have working internet

IPv4 is 192.168.x.xx
subnet is 255.255.255.0
default gate is 192.168.x.xxx

there are numbers where the x's are im just not sure if thats info i should keep to myself lol

here's what i suggest... get back to basics, so unplug or take out the wireless card, and make sure there's no ethernet cable connected to the network jack on the compute and enter device manager and uninstall the network card. shut down the pc. unplug the computer from the wall and press the power button to dissipate the capacitors. plug it back in and boot into BIOS and disable the network card. boot into safe mode and uninstall the network card if it shows up then restart. boot into normal windows and see if you have errors in event manager relating to network. shut down and boot back into BIOS enabling the network card. install network card drivers you get from the manufacturers website

Ya just asking if it was there ;) sometimes you'll have 0's for the default gateway you didn't need to post me the #'s. What I meant by static IP is you can force an IP. Unlikely that's the issue since you weren't sure what it was :D

Read through this forum. He was having the same issue and this is where i was going with the ipconfig etc. Follow the suggested steps on here and post back and let us know if it gets you anywhere :).

Try clicking on your Network icon that is active and select properties. Under the TCP/IP setting select properties and make sure the first page says Obtain DNS Server Address automatically.

if opened up my computer before and the network thing is on-board from what a more computer part intelligent person told me, like the plug goes to a small silvr box that is attached to the mother board ... so i imagine i cant take that out. or if i course i would probably break something and rather not risk it

when i go in my devices to uninstall the network drivers i get a big list of like 10 things only less then half of which can even be removed

but i guess ill try to do something with the BIOS, dont think ill get far though
