[SOLVED] Computer stuck at 100mbps internet speed when 2.5gbs capable

Hello,

I'm having a problem with my download speeds with a new PC build.
Ethernet driver is Realtek Gaming 2.5GbE, but seems to be stuck on 100 mbps.
I have updated drivers and changed speed duplex to 2gbps full duplex, it works for a couple seconds downloading at 90mbps which is my actual download speed then drops to 10mbps while downloading. The only setting that doesn't disconnect is 100 mbps full duplex.

I cannot seem to change or find a way to change my ethernet to 1gbps instead of 100 mbps.

First you always need to have the port set to "auto". Since you must set both ends to the same thing and you can not generally set the router it will get confused. The router since it is set to auto will not get the speed negotiation signals and many times will drop to 100mbps and sometimes even to 10mbps.

You problem is most commonly caused by a bad cable. Many times this is because you have a fake cable. This is even more likely when you have a so called cat7 cable. End consumers are stupid and they think bigger number is always better.
For most users you only need cat5e. Cat5e might also work at 2.5g but you really should use cat6. If you have 10g ports you would use cat6a.

Real cat7 cable was never...

Real cat7 cable was never fully approved by the certification entities. It also did not provide much benefit over cat6a but was much more expensive so it was never really used much.
The only other kind of cable you see is cat8 but that is for 40gbit stuff in data centers. You will not find it actually being sold to consumer and if you do it is likely fake.

The fake ethernet cable problem is massive. Almost all the cable you find on even popular sites like amazon is fake. It is really strange they will ban fake purses but amazon themself sells fake cable.


So first if the price is low especially for a high end cable like cat7 be suspect.

The key cost for a cable is the copper metal and that is had massive price increases even before the latest inflation increases. Most fake cables are using tricks to reduce the amount of copper metal but that makes the cable not function correctly.

What you are looking for is pure copper cable (no CCA) and it must have wire size 22-24 (none of that flat or thin cable). Reputable vendors know about the fake cable issue and very clearly put this information in their ads. If you can not determine this look for another vendor.
On the cables you already have this information is marked on the sides of quality cable along with letters like EIA/TIA which they paid to have their cable certified. If you find no markings that is another sign of a fake cable.


Note even the very best cables can fail. All it takes is one wire to be slightly loose inside one of the plugs and it will drop to 100mbps or fail completely.
