My windows 7 PC was working well until a few weeks ago when some of my steam games would start to load and then never respond. after a few weeks of trying I decided to just wipe my whole computer to try and solve the problem. Well after putting in the installation disc I got a message saying that I couldn't upgrade a 64 bit computer to 32 bit and a second message under it saying I couldn't upgrade 32 bit windows to 64 bit windows. It also wont let me receive windows updates. (I was hoping that might solve things)

Solution

My installation disc wont let me use it because its a 64 bit disc and its identifying my computer as 32 bit (Which its not)

No-no-no-no. Your 64 bit installation DVD must be one that can install on a NEW machine, and not an UPGRADE version that must verify your prior version before updating. IS IT? Because once boot into it, pick the NEW option and it should override everything not caring what is in there before.

Maybe you are using the wrong DVD and/or not sure what version you had there before?

New install, if you have that DVD, don't care what's there before. UPGRATE ONLY DVD, 32/64 bit must match.

Ive never upgraded my pc its been 64 bit windows 7 for 3 years
I have used this disc before to factory reset my computer because of issues and it worked 100% fine.

Like ive said ive used this EXACT disc ive used to factory restore it before. that doesnt explain why I cant get windows updates.

How exactly are you trying to re-install this? The system clearly thinks you are trying to upgrade which sounds like you are trying to run this from inside Windows, is that right? The only time I have seen an "upgrade" message from a Windows setup is if you try to run the setup inside the current Windows boot and not from booting off the disk.

Im currently using the cyberpower windows 7 home premium sp1 64bit that I originally installed windows onto my computer with. Also the disc has worked before to fully wipe my computer with a fresh install.
Its also pretty much the only answer ive gotten from the cyberpower support (So helpful)

So that's the disk you are using, HOW are you using it? Are you booting off it? Is it telling you that the drive will be wiped if you continue, etc...? Can you select manual options and manually delete the existing partitions and run a clean setup?

I put it in my disc drive I manually run it. Then it allows me to pick between 3 choices between ultimate pro and home premium. I select windows premium then its runs for a bit then I get the error that I have posted further up.

Contact Cyberpower, I have not seen their restore disks, but it's odd that you would have more than one option and that it will try to upgrade your system instead of wiping it. Normally restore disks just boot to one option which will wipe the disk and put the original operating system back on, not give you 3 options of what version to install.
