Computer turns on, black screen, keyboard and mouse doesn't work

So, I was playing games today, and I decided to shut the computer down as I left my home. After I came home, I tried to turn it on, but I only got a black screen + the keyboard and mouse were not working. They were also not lighting with their green and red colors.

It's gotta be the motherboard. If you already tried with a different PSU and RAM, checked voltages, and it still fails to POST, there's no other way. If it was the processor, it would beep a warning.

Send that motherboard to the manufacturer.

are you sure your monitor is on and working correctly? have you tried plugging anouther device in to make sure the issue is not your monitor?

are you using integrated graphics, or a seperate video card? do the fans and (lights?) on that card turn on?

This happened to me too today, though i have no idea how to fix it. Did this by chance happen when running a program through steam?

If they were no beeps at all when you turned it on, it means that it failed to POST (Power-On Self Test).

This usually means that something big is going on, such as a faulty PSU, that the RAM or CPU aren't properly placed, things like that. Is there any chance that something might have happened while you were away? (ie. a power surge, someone accidentally hitting the case, etc).

If the answer is no, open it up, clean it all with compressed air, and check all connections, and try again. Sometimes what causes this is not the PSU itself, but a faulty connection with the motherboard.

If all else fails, try to borrow a different PSU and try.

That's tricky. Still no beep at all? Probably the motherboard's the cause then.

If you still have your other PC around you might try putting your newer PSU on the older PC and check if it goes, just to rule out any PSU problems. If it works you can put it back and be sure it's good.

Also try removing any unnecessary periphals (CD Rom, PCI cards, if you have integrated video then also remove any discrete video cards). Take out the RAM sticks and put them back on, probably on different slots. Unplug everything (SATAs, fans, etc) and then plug it back. All this while cleaning with air. And try again.

Try removing and reinserting the button cell battery that drives the real time clock. I've seen this happen several times, and for some reason this fixes it. Make sure there's no corrosion on battery, and if possible measure it with a volt meter to make sure it's still at 3V.

If that doesn't work, reseating the RAM is always a good thing to try.

I checked if its still 3V and yes it is, and I also reseated the RAM, even tried to run it with one stick and different RAMs, but didnt work, I still got warranty, but would be better to know whats the faulty, my brother that works with hardware said it looks like its the MOBO, gonna try returning and getting a brand new one, if that doesnt work, I will have to check other parts.

steam is a reputable program and is not the source of the problem. theoretically, If all lights are green and there are no error codes or anything, it should be fine, but it is clearly not. have you tried using a different port on the video card? also, have you tried moving the card to a different pci-e x16 slot?

Actually I just realized that the motherboard wasn't giving out any power to the usb ports or the graphic card, but the fans worked. So it didn't give any power to the ports, which it is supposed to do, so I will have to call the shop and send the motherboard back for a repair/replacement.

I have this exact same issue. My computer died Saturday the 19th of July. I was downloading games from Steam when I left the computer on. Came back to a black screen. Only way I can power off the machine is to shut off the PSU or unplug it from the wall. No power to my usb ports, no boot screen on my monitor, all of the fans and lights inside the case come on. Can give more information if necessary but would really prefer to not have to switch out my Mobo. Seems really weird 3 of us have had this problem occur while downloading from steam.

I had just reloaded Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit the day before and installed all of the updates (150+ of them, 'cause holy cow). Only things on my computer were the OS, Cisco N600 wireless adapter driver, XFX Radeon 6950-CNFC driver, and steam (which happened to be in the middle of downloading about 80 gigs of games).

Exact same thing happened to me, your post mirrors exactly what I would have written. Brand new computer, works for 5 days, downloading games overnight, and suddenly none of the ports receive power, no boot on screen. I just replaced my motherboard 10 minutes ago, and its still the same. Won't work.

If you find anything that works, PLEASE reply to me and tell me what it is.

Hi AustinL. What I eventually ended up finding was that one of my RAM sticks had gone bad. It was, of course, the very last component I took off my motherboard too. I would try unplugging everything except a monitor and a single stick of RAM and seeing if the motherboard will load anything at that point. Hope that's helpful. Best of luck to you.

Hi, So I had this exact problem today. I was downloading from steam and left the room, my monitor went into power save mode so I wasn't shocked when I came back and the screen was black however it never came back one when moving mouse or pressing keys ect. I tried numerous reboots but nothing seemed to be getting power, everything else with the computer sounded like it was booting up. I found on an old forum about some bloke unplugging the power source, switching it off and waiting 5 minutes before switching it back on. This actually worked for me. I have no idea what has happened but give that a try.

ya so me too i think i downloaded an update from steam is what i last remember. I think it asked me to restart and when i did screen had no signal and usb ports were not working. Graphics card works, ram works, cpu works, must be the motherboard :/
