Computer won't boot after CPU upgrade?

I recently purchased an i7-870 as an upgrade to an i3-550 for my Gateway SX2850, but now it won't start up. I have the latest BIOS installed and I cleaned off all excess thermal compound before applying it. When I attempt to turn it on, the fan starts, runs for 1 second, then turns off.

They don't come out and say which I7 but that sure does sound like the right one

Ok, do you have any idea why it's not booting correctly?

I took out the processor just to look underneath, and it turns out that a tiny bit of thermal paste got down with the pins on the socket. I got out the thermal paste and now the computer boots up. The only problem now is that there is 1 long beep then 2 short beeps when I turn it on. I sort of expected this and I am going to get a video card.
