Computer won't boot when I enable Optimus

Hey, I think I already know the answer to this, but it's quite a pain resetting my laptop so I'm going to check before I go through the process again:

When I turn Optimus on in BIOS (this is after a clean install of Windows 8) my computer won't boot.
IS the issue that my laptop with the clean Windows 8 OS doesn't support optimus? Or is it that I simply do not have the drivers for my nvidia gpu yet installed? (In other words, would not having the drivers for my nvidia gpu break optimus?) (Also, I do NOT have the drivers yet installed, I tried but I must have had the wrong kind of drivers. Trying again after I post this)

And if my Optimus is destined to never work again, how can I force my computer to only use the discrete graphics?

AND... If the problem is that my computer isn't detecting the discrete graphics, what do you recommend?

Just curious for some input.
Thanks!

Solution
You should specifically be using the graphics driver package provided by the laptop manufacturer. On Sony laptops that have the speed/stamina switch for instance, they only work properly when the graphics driver from Sony is installed. Go to the laptop manufacturer's website and download the graphics driver, it should include all the software you need to operate the discrete and integrated cards.

If it a deceptacon laptop then you need to turn on megaton. :). With some laptop settings it can change the ram to CPU/mb speed to where the ram or system board can't Handel the setting. Most new laptop with combo chipset you an turn on just one or the other under video devices.

...That sounds like a brilliant idea. Thank you for mentioning that!
