Hey, guys. I've come across some trouble with my build. (This is my first build) I have had the computer built for quite sometime. Before I finally bought an OS disc to finally move past the BIOS, I used to power it on just to examine the BIOS. Today, I bought windows 8 and began to install it. Everything seemed to work as it usually has. Turned on no problem, began to install the os disc and all. Well, before I finally reached the windows 8 tile page my computer instantly shut off follower by a burning smell. Failed to turn on after that instance. I would hit the power button and for a split second the fans tried spinning (also when my psu is on, there is a green light on my mobo) but stopped. I tested the PSU with the ol' paperclip method and it powers on with the fan spinning. My conclusion is that it's either my mobo or cpu? (A while ago after I finished the build I had it on one day and I did notice a burning smell to it, but it still worked from that point after having turned it off and on.) I have wondered if maybe I didn't have enough thermal paste on it, although I had a stock heatsink with paste on it already. I'm really frustrated at this point and any help will be greatly appreciated. Once again, it boots for a second and then cuts right back off. I didn't see any difference on the cpu and applied new paste to it but no luck. Possibly the motherboard? Please help. I think maybe it overheated? The cpu Temps used to be around 92-95° F cpu problem?

I have an Intel based build:
I5 3570k cpu (stock heatsink)
Asus P8Z77-VPRO Motherboard
One 8 gb stick of memory (corsair vengeance)
KDM ATX PSU 775w

and yes to the temp. It usually started around the higher 80's and then slowly began to rise but would stay at around mid 90's

90f is very VERY cool for a cpu, that's about 32c. (my house internal temp was 32c today) I've fried a few CPUs in my time, there is no smell. It happens so fast. Temp hits 100c and internal circuits melt, pc shuts off, no smoke, nothing.
My very first guess would be shorted the PSU. Probably a ton of extra cables, one of the ends touched the case maybe? PSU's are very smelly when they short out. The melted wires are impregnated with a compound that is intended to smell bad, and caps when they blow smell bad.

Didn't mean to down vote your response (read it on my mobile device and clicked it by accident) sorry. Anyways, I also failed to mention that my case (Thermaltake chaser MK-I) has multi-colored fans pre-installed at which time the moment I pressed the color changing effect button on the case for the fans was the exact moment my computer failed and turned off on me only to no turn on after that. Could that be the reason? maybe it affected the motherboard? corrupted it? Like i said, I tested the psu using the paperclip method and the fan began to spin as well as the glow lighting up as it was installed inside the psu. I really don't have another PSU lying around to be able to test if that's the issue but it seems fine for the most part. I could splurge out another 40$ for one but it seems to be working fine. I'm really leaning towards the mobo (which was is a used mobo a friend gave me, btw. which worked fine for him and did me well up until the whole fan color changing situation. Could changing the fan color be a reason it shut off at that very moment or does it seem like something else? like the psu still? Also, yes, I wasn't aware of average cpu temps which kind of had me confused, but I took it out just to examine and it, cleaned it, placed it back inside with some thermal paste, seems fine for the most part.
