I have a Dell desktop with an Intel D945GCL motherboard. The motherboard has one SATA connection, two IDE connections, and one Floppy connection.

The computer came with the HD, both optical drives, and the floppy connected IDE.

A while back, bored, I removed the IDE HD and replaced it with a SATA 80 GB HD. Now I need the SATA HD for something else and tried to connect the IDE HD in the computer but the computer won't recognize the IDE HD.

In BIOS under Drive Configuration is the following:

Diskette Drive A-recognized
SATA Primary Drive[set to auto] SATA HD recognized.
Primary Master Drive[set to auto] No drive installed.
Primary Slave Drive[set to auto] No drive installed.
Secondary Master Drive[set to auto] CD/DVD RW recognized
Secondary Slave Drive[set to auto] DVD Multi-player not recognized[but works]
IDE Drive UDMA-On

When I boot the computer with the SATA HD, after the post screen a black screen that has the following:
Primary Drive 0-Not recognized
Primary Drive 1-Not recognized
Secondary Drive1-Not recognized

Then I am asked to press F1 to boot, F2 to enter setup. I F1 is pressed the computer boots.

If I unplug the SATA HD and connect the IDE HD I get basically the same as above but when I press F1 I get the message "Press F1 to boot, F2 to enter setup. No matter how many times you press F1 the same message reappears.

I have tried setting the BIOS settings as many ways as I can think of and cannot get the computer to recognize he IDE HD. And this is the IDE HD that originally came out of the computer.

So, anyone have a idea how to get the computer to recognize the IDE HD. Thanks.

The IDE drive is a Western Digital Caviar. It has four settings. Cable select, Master[no jumper], Master with slave, and slave. I have tried cable select, master, master with slave and the computer won't recognize the IDE HD. Thanks.
