Hey guys,

Sorry for the noob question but this is frustrating the hell out of me. I like to hibernate my computer as I usually leave programs running but when I hibernate the computer, the power button stops working and I have to hard reset the computer (push the power supply switch, hold the power button for 5 seconds and flip the switch again) for the computer to boot, but then it will boot out of hibernation.

I have had this problem in the past but had either solved it or formated my way out of it due to frustration but I was not able to figure it out this time.I have read some of the threads you guys had on it and wasnt able to solve it using those either. I should also mention that I am running a newly formatted version of Windows 8 Pro and that hibernation was working fine till the format.

I have tried:
1. Setting default BIOS options
2. Reseating RAM
3. Disabling and Reenabling Hibernate using cmd (powercfg -h off)
4. Giving peripheral the ability in Device Manager the ability to wake device (keyboard, mouse and Phone using WOL)

None of the steps above worked. I'm thinking the only way out would be to reformat AGAIN but that is not a very desirable option. Any advice would be greatly appreciated guys.

Thank you for you time!

Edit:

PC specs if they matter:
Phenom II x4 965 (stock)
Corsair Vengance 2x4GB @ 1600
M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 motherboard
PNY 770 GTX 2G

Solution

Could be something to do with Dynamic Tick which supposedly stops the clock during idling, perhaps during hibernate too?
Anyway try disabling it from elevated CMD prompt
Bcdedit /setdisabledynamictick yes

I have no idea whats going on at the moment but the computer is booting up fine from hibernate just based off any keypress which is weird because I hadn't changed any settings before asking for help and had to hard reset to boot this morning. I may have to leave it hibernating for a longer period of time than a few minutes. I will post back with results and if your method works tomorrow.

Thanks for your time Onus!

It seems that when the computer is off for about 2-3 hours there is no problem booting it back up but overnight (8 hours) is the problem. I tried using Ctrl+Alt+Del and it didnt work either. Also, I have tried disabling Hybrid Sleep disabled.

This is typically either 1) a compatibility issue, if the PSU is not happy with low-power states, 2) motherboard hardware problem or requires a BIOS update.

I recommend you turn hibernate option off in your windows power savings options. The newer PCs have gotten better about compatibility here, but I remember my older builds had the same issues.

Sorry about the late reply guys, I've been out of town for a bit. The OS is installed on its own partition on a standard hard drive, and it was able to perform hibernations without a problem till this latest system reinstall :/ I might just have to reinstall the OS and see if that fixes it because I can't even use the sleep feature on the computer either meaning I have to do full shutdowns between uses.

Also, did you install to Unallocated space rather than a Partition? Windows 8 prefers this so the System Reserved Partition can be created properly. Just use Drive options (Advanced) during installation to delete the partition you want to install to and choose the Unallocated Space...

Just turned Dynamic Tick off using the command line "bcdedit /set disabledynamictick yes", thanks Dodger46, I'll report back if it works later tonight. Also, Windows 8 was installed in unallocatted space I believe since I deleted the original Windows 8 Partition and then used that deleted space to install the new OS when booting from the CD.

Thank you all for your suggestions, I really appreciate the help 😀

I SOLVED IT 😀

Sorry for the late post guys and thank you all so much for your help. After reformatting again and still having the same problem I remembered reading something about the feature that helps windows turn on faster having something to do with this issue a year or so ago so I turned it off and now everything works!

To disable this feature:

-Power Options
-Require a Password on Wakeup (left hand list)
--Change settings that are currently unavailble
--Uncheck "Turn on fast setup"

I waited 2 days to see if it had actually solved the problem before posting fake results so I'm sorry for the late response.

Thanks again guys!
