Hello,
I make my income from horse racing and need to have at least 4 bookmakers running at the same time. This slows down the computer and often I can't place bets because I'm waiting for the different windows to display. What kind of processor can cope with this?

Does each 'bookmaker' work as a separate thread - if so then go for something with as many cores as possible - AMD ( IMHO ) are better for that. If they all act as a single process - use Intel as they generally use higher clock speeds and get better single threaded performance.

My desktop will run dual quad core AMD's, whereas the server I use has 4 AMD quad cores.

Or if the money isn't so much of a problem - then have a look for dual or quad 12 core opterons.

For a critical application such as this, you need TWO computers, both up and running. Go with models that have the i7 CPU (Sandy Bridge) and at least 8 GBs of RAM in each one.

This will protect you against one computer going down at a critical time.
