Hi guys, so I built my first PC. As noted in the title, I have an i7-6700k being cooled by a Hyper 212 LED. I never overclocked the processor and I don't really plan to even if I have liquid cooling. Nonetheless, I am getting skeptical with my temps because even when I do basic browsing the temps randomly jumps to 60 degrees for a second, and then revert to normal temps. It's the same case when gaming, its temps randomly jumps to 70 or 80, then revert back to "okay" temps. Is this expected from this air cooler? Or you guys think I did something wrong?

I used the included thermal paste from Cooler Master, and I think I kinda put too much. (Actually, I think some of it got into the green part of the processor. But it's literally minuscule in amount. So I don't think I should be concerned by that. -- I have no thermal paste from Cooler Master, and I fear that it's already of good quality, and I buy a low quality thermal paste which makes my situation even worse.

Sorry for the long explanation.

A few things you can check, are you sure the heatsink is mounted properly? I know the mounting system on the 212 is convoluted so make sure the four screws are tight. Another thing you should check is the fan, can you see it spinning? Is the CPU fan header plugged in? You can also go to your motherboard BIOS to regulate the CPU fan speed.

Hmm, I do think the heatsink is mounted properly, I mean, I've been using the PC for weeks now, so if it is not mounted right, then I should notice some grave symptoms, no? -- Nonetheless, I'll try to screw it tighter. However, I was advised to not screw it too tight because it may damage the motherboard. Just one question though, if I do intend to tighten the cooler, do I have to coat it with fresh thermal paste? Because, the thermal paste on it now is gonna be "adjusted" or "reshaped", so should I change thermal paste?

As for the fan, yes the fans is spinning for sure and it is connected to the CPU fan header. With regards to adjusting the fan speed, is that necessary? Doesn't the fan speed change by itself accordingly to temps?

Having scanned through the article, I would conclude that what I'm experiencing right now is normal and nothing to be concerned with. Right?
Because as stated there:
• Core temperatures respond instantly to changes in load.
• Core temperatures up to 80C are safe.

For one, I never overclocked the processor. So theoretically, I should be fine?

Yeah don't tighten the screws too hard. You wouldn't need to change the thermal paste after tightening if you choose to go that route. BIOS settings would allow you to change fan curves (i.e. how much rpm% at each temperature). As RealBeast mentioned, 80C at load is an perfectly safe temperature but for a stock clocked 6700K with a Hyper 212 it does seem a bit warm. You should not be concerned if you plan to use the 6700K at stock speeds.
