I thought nvidia were simply planning to rebadge gt200 chips as gt300's? hence the jump from 200-400 in the naming structure.

or have they changed their minds given low yields and excess faulty Gf100 cores?

i hope this is true though, i have no intention of buying nvidia right now, but i think its very important that all current-gen cards support Dx11 to help push it into the mainstream as soon as possible. if they can offer a range of Dx11 cards right down to the 100 dollar level as ATI do, then it may become a standard very quickly, which will benefit all of us.

I do not really see the point in Upgrading midrange this cycle irrelevant of what Mid Range cards Nvidia or ATI release.

I want to see performance increase when I purchase a new mid-range card.

The 5770 does not give me a increase in raw performance over my 4870!

Yes DX11 and Eyefinity and lower power but these are not worth spending money on alone as I do not have 3 monitors (along with the vast majority of mid range people, besides mid range cards will struggle with playable resolution) I am not too fussed by the power consumption (My PC will only save less than a lightbulb) and DX11 is simply not mainstream yet!

Now Nvidia cards will be around the same performace levels as the ATI cards so no thanks.

I will be waiting another cycle as 4870 still does what I need it to!

(Unless I bite the upgrade bug in the but and jump to enthusiast level and get 5850/5870, now that is a worthy upgrade!)

[citation][nom]liquidsnake718[/nom]They can also brag about HOT and BURNING preformance taking a toll on testers CPU's, Memory, and mostly PSU's!!!![/citation]

Yeah... or laptop motherboards. Bricking (tens of) thousands of laptops, including mine, has lost me as an Nvidia customer. HP an Nvidia only get to screw me once before I swear them off forever.

Not sure how under performing cards for cheap are anything to get excited about. Like most gamers i just want the best card for the best price. AMD is filling that order. If nvida wants my dollars they need to do better.

How is donate organs help pays for a 480 or 470. On the other hand, people do pay money for "donated" eggs. (Yes, it is as legal as it sounds but people still do it)

Nvidia is to my cheek, while ATi is in plain site. I hope that nvidia has drivers that actually make the GTX 480 and 470 more of a powerhouse like they say and wish it was.

It will be interesting to see how much they cut of from g100 chip to get these cheaper alternatives. Is it direct cut everything half tweak (like normally) or do they leave of some bigger brother features?
There is so much silicon in Ferni's-calculation power, that it is not very effective as an games card (compared to the chip size). G100 is huge beast in mathematic aplications, and other task like that. So is is possible to reduce power in that department and leave more to gaming power. It has huge impact on how big these smaller GPU's will be compared to ATI's low end DX11 chips.

You are making an incorrect comparison. The 4870 you have right now is replaced by the 5870 which is a gigantic performance increase. The 5770 is the replacement for the 4770 which is much weaker compared to your 4870. Many people confuse this because of the price similarity between the 4870 & 5770. In fact, the 5770 is pretty damn amazing when you consider all of this. Its a boost from the 4770, performs the same as 4870 with newer features for the same price.

Nvidia stuff...non news really, this is to be expected. I wonder if the mid-lower range card will have the same power issues.

I have faith the nvidia has learned the many lessons of the 8800 phenomenon! If the card is great, and the price is reasonable, then you have a goldmine under your belt! No doubt about it, this is the time for nvidia to kiss our bottoms because frankly there's not much reason for me to(for the first time in 5 years) not go with ATI!

Or i can just buy an ATI card with what i'm sure will be comparable performance for less, and then take the money I saved and buy an electric space heater and put it in my computer case and just pretend I own a new nvidia card.

If nvidia can offer cards with the same or better performance as the gtx480 for $200 less than what they're listed at now, ppl MIGHT be willing to tolerate the high temps and power draw. There no way in hell anyone would want one that performs any worse though.

To the linux guy, I don't know if you haven't been paying attention but ATI (HD series anyway) card support is getting better and better quite quickly. I'm not sure how much longer that will be a valid complaint.

(I use linux dual-booted.)

I'm in the market for a new video card NOW. Guess who this previously Nvidia customer is going to buy from? I'm going to be buying my first ATI card next month, and I can't wait.

you are comparing a high-end card from last gen to a mid range card of this gen. ao of course you aren't going to see a big gain.
if you moved from your 4870 to a 5870 you would be doubling your performance. which is a huge gain in a single generation.

[citation][nom]shin0bi272[/nom]is this really that big of a deal though? Nvidia always unleashes a range of cards after a flagship card. They will just be lower end versions of the 480 with one of the models being smushed onto a dual card setup and turned into the fastest card nvidia can offer. So basically nvidia told you the song remains the same. Now if we could just get them to actually produce these cards on time and under budget the world would be covered in chocolate and gumdrops.[/citation]

hhmmmmmmm....chocolate gumdrops........d'oh!!!
