I would say yes, I went from a 9800xt to a x800gto (about a 6800gs) and I can run recent games on high with AA and AF. Ok fear would kill it a bit but it would still cope well.

Yeah a GeForce 6800 GS should hold you for 1 year, esp considering you're still using a Radeon 9800 XT.

If you want to keep using FSAA though look towards the Radeon X850 Pro (or similar AGP varient with close to 8 Gpixel / sec performance).

By using SM2.0/SM2.0b (ATI) for 12 months (games don't need it) you'll boost frame rates aswell. (Yes, I know that sounds dumb, but you've been using ATI for awhile and may favour FSAA over SM3.0).

Oh friends! I've found a really nice deal for Leadtek 6800 GT (Second hand) in my country. 150 usd... and also for HIS X800 XT PE around 180 usd. See the newer technology, 6800 GT is a good cookie and also faster than GS. I will OC it and it will be even faster. I heard that X800 XT cant be overclocked very well.

Yeah the X800XT doesn't overclock much. - [Confirmed]
The GeForce 6800 GT is slightly faster than the 6800 GS, but only slightly. - [Confirmed]
It should also overclock fairly well, but not 'heaps'.

About those high resotion movies. Well, It may just be me, but that resolution won't work on my display (I have Iiyama 904UT) and 1600x1200 is highest I can get. People with standard ( 19 or 17" screen) won't be able to run it too. So I don't care if my gfx card will be able to run them or not :). I just won't be watching them on comp (and I just never watch dvd movies here.. I prefer my 21" crt tv).

Now for the rest of goodies. The Shaders 3.0 were anounced to be "revolutioN" and I really don't see much difference between 2.0 and 3.0. (And what I'm really worried is that game makers concentrate only on gfx goodies, forgetting about playability, but that's other topic).

So I'd get a decent card anyho. After all, if you will use the approach "I'll wait with upgrade cuz current cards won't run future games" you will just be sticked to your current system for ages :) And, taking that you have about year, till Vista becomes user friendly, and fist SP is launched :), you will need to change gfx anyway :)

So...get 1900xt, or 7900gt, and have fun, waiting for DX10 :)
