Hey guys, I got an I7 6800K. I noticed on the box it says that you need a motherboard with LGA2011 socket. BUT I read online that you actually need an LGA2011 V3 socket. Just wanted to see what you guys say since I am not really smart with these things.

Also, then x99 motherboards are so expensive and I can't find them in any local store! I am worried about buying it online and then the BIOS is not the version I want, and I don't know anyone that can update it for me with the same CPU. Is i7 6800K compatible with anything other than an x99?

Otherwise, I will end up "trying" to sell it, and get a ryzen 5 2600X, since I can easily get a motherboard for it. It just feels like a waste of both money and a good CPU. 🙁

Boards on the X79 chipset are LGA 2011 and boards on the X99 chipset are LGA 2011 v3, unfortunately you can't use a 2011v3 CPU on an X79 chipset board. No one sells X99 boards new because the new LGA 2066 platform has been out for so long.

Check here for compatibility: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000005592/processors/intel-core-processors.html

Unfortunately the entire LGA 2011 (v3 included) platform is basically obsolete now with Ryzen existing, my advice would be to resell/return the 6800K and get a Ryzen cpu/mobo combo unless for some reason you'd be losing so much money that it's worth it to just buy an X99 motherboard.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, that kind sucks though. I was thinking about buying a used motherboard x99. But most of them are pretty old, and will be difficult to update its BIOS. Guess I have to sell it my i7 🙁
