Confused man needs help on pins

OKAY SO LISTEN CAREFULLY.
I have a 14 pin mobo hookup, my new psu only has a 20 pin hookup for it, i accidentally bought the wrong adapter (24 pin to 14 pin) Is there anything i can do other than buying the right adapter? (20 pin to 14 pin)

What PSU do you have any quality ones will have a 24 pin.

I believe many 24 pin connectors are sometimes 20+4 anyways, meaning the first 20 pins on a 24 pin connector should be the same. You should be able to stick the 20 pin connector into the 24 pin connector, no? If you look at the pin shapes, it can only fit one way, and if they line up correctly, then there should be no problem. You may have to trim off the 4 non-used pins with an exacto knife.
