Confused upgrade path for a friend

Hey there, my buddy has a P4V533-MX with a 2.4Ghz Celeron and 512 of RAM which IMO is the greatest machine of all time.
He is looking for what his upgrade options are. I know about options for AMD and whats the best for different people there, but i am lost when it comes to intel.

I looked on newegg to see what would fit this socket, and 3 types of celerons,Prescotts, Northwoods and P4EE.
I know i dont want a P4EE for this...lol, i dont like P4E's(a tad too hot) and I assume all celerons are POS's.

So am i down to Northwood, but which one? This board only supports 533 FSB.

Or should i have him ditch all this invest what little money he has into buying my computer for $700? (A64 2800+, 1G OCZ GOLD 2-2-2-5, BFG6800GT, Chaintech VNF3-250, Thermaltake 420W, WD 200GB)


His goal is to play games(BF2 especially), he has a TI 4200 and was looking into buying a higher GPU. But i warned him buying anything too high would be rediculous because of the CPU limiting him.

he doesn't have a lot of money but is anxious to play the games now. I said maybe buy a P4 and a 6800NU($180?) maybe a 9800pro?


Personally i would say for him to buy my computer, but he doesn't have the cash for that wont for a couple months. he has about $350. So what options does he have? my guess is a cheap P4(which one? i dont know.) and a 6800NU. but i dont know.

please help asap, like i said, he is anxious to have his A$$ handed to him on BF2.

I know this may seem rediculous but i would like to know with a 2.2 or a 2.66 Northwood whats the fastest GPU i could reccomend without it being WAY choked by the CPU? I assume a 6800NU would be alright, and i assume 6800GT would be alright too. but i dont know.

You could just sell a portion of your computer (board, cpu, and memory), and do a partial upgrade for your own system to socket 939. He could use his old video card until he gets more money. What power supply does he use now, and is his case proprietary (Ibm, hp,compaq, or dell)?

Why would i sell him parts of my computer to him? I dont have a 2nd computer to do my own things on. That would be like me selling my car to buy new tires....

I either tell hi to wait and save up to buy my computer....or he does minor upgrades and waits till i have saved up more money and the cost of things have gone down and i will part with my computer for a lower cost.

I don't follow the price of intel systems, so am guessing he can't get $350 for his rig, which he could then throw in another $350 to buy yours.

Otherwise, I'd suggest he up the ram to a gig and get a 9800p or even better, a 6600GT

I wish he would buy mine so i could drop another 500-600 on top of that to do a major overhaul.

So your vote is a gig of ram, keep the cpu and buy a 6600GT? (although i did see a PNY 6800Vanilla for $156)

I would suggest a P4b <A HREF="http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819116148" target="_new">2.8ghz</A>
and a <A HREF="http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814150080" target="_new">6600GT</A>
It may not be up to your system, but it is getting a whole lot closer.

Thats what i was thinking....but i likey the AMD (because i game) and i dont know much about what he would need for a CPU not to choke a GPU. a 2Ghx AMD can keep up with a 6800GT but i dont think an p4 could do that as well.

A 6800gt is about the best a 2.8b can handle! (speaking from experence here) A 6800NU will work great and you have a chance to unlock the pipes.

Also if your buying all new ram, you could maybe OC that 2.8b to 3.4ghz pretty easy and maybe 3.6 with better cooling for a nice performance boost. That is if the baord will allow him.

Either way, he will be much better off getting away from that celery stick and worn out dip for a videocard!

I like when we LAN it up and he lags with lowest settings on everything and i have everything maxed out on 16x12
Any game he can run, i can max out, and i dont even have a top end machine....yet!
