[SOLVED] Confusion regarding inputs on an old monitor

Hello, I am attempting to set up my old monitor as a secondary monitor, but its inputs are not directly compatible with my newer graphics card. The monitor has one each of VGA and DVI inputs with no more modern inputs. My graphics card has one HDMI port (currently occupied by my much younger monitor) and 3 DP ports. I am aware of the existence of converters to change the inputs for compatibility, but my manual doesn't say if I need both the DVI and VGA cables plugged into the monitor, or if I only need to convert one of the two for it to function. The offending monitor is an Acer G236HL LCD Monitor. My primary question is does a monitor with DVI and VGA require both to function, or just one, although further advice about the reliability of adapters would be appreciated.
Edited for Clarity
Thanks,
Andarethh
