Connected but unable to use the internet

My granddad is running windows 8 on an HP pavilion and can't browse the internet. He had norton internet security and thought that was all he needed but i just added Avast and malwarebytes and did like 6 hours of scanning to get his desktop finally clean from viruses and malware. I thought that was all it needed but I still can't connect to the internet. Things i've done

Pinged www.google.com - success
netsh winsock reset - after i restart will work for <5 min then cut right back off
Checked that the network adapters were present - wireless and LAN are good
updated the drivers for the adapters
Using my computer wirelessly on the same network so i don't think its the router.

I'm uninstalling Norton and seeing if that helps.

He had Mindspark and a few others that I've heard of but they're all gone now.

Any ideas?

Check internet options, connections, lan settings. See if there is a check in the use proxy server. If you get rid of it. A bad malware infection can do this.

i checked those, it started working after i uninstalled Norton Internet Security. Hope it sticks. Thank you though.
