Connecting 8+4-pin PSU to 16-pin motherboard

I'm using Fujitsu ESPRIMO E500 and I wanted to install better PSU. The one that I'm currently using is Fujitsu DPS-250AB-62 A (250W-280W), and I wanted to install DELL H290AM-00 (290W). I don't have budget to buy new PSU so I wanted to know if I can connect Fujitsu (8-pin ATX power + 4-pin CPU power) to 16-pin motherboard, and there will be 4 pins empty. Will it work or is it safe not to do that?

it is safe to not do that, those boards have proprietary PSUs with different wiring, unless u want to burn it?
