Question Connecting HP 6P LaserJet to OS X 10.6.8 via USB lead

I am trying to print with my HP 6P LaserJet from my iMac under OS X 10.6.8; connection to the iMac is USB; connection to the printer is parallel port; cable used has those connections at each end; the OS recognizes the printer but, when l try to print, nothing happens.

Go to  > System Preferences > Printers & Scanners > Click your printer > open print queue. Is anything stuck in here? Also, is it paused?

Parallel to USB has always been iffy, and it's far worse now that parallel ports themselves are no longer officially supported by modern OSes and everything's gone to USB 3.0.

OTOH hiding the parallel port interface behind a cheap used print server like a JetDirect 300x seems to be problem-free in any OS, as it only sees an IP address to print to. Should at least have generic PCL drivers well into the future so may even work for another 18 years!
