I was recently gifted a 144hz monitor(https://www.amazon.com/Viotek-GN24CW-Speakers-Bezel-Less-DisplayPort/dp/B07HGK5S9Z) and I tried to connect it to my laptop (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LD4MGR6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) I tried to switch my monitor to 144hz but it only showed 120 hz so I put it at that but when I did it started showing "Out Of Range" so after researching a bit online I found that it was because my monitor didnt support 144hz even tho it clearly states that it does. So I think the problem is my hdmi cable since its a random cable that I found laying around in a box, its probably hdmi 1.4. So I was going to just buy a new hdmi cable but on the amazon page on question it says that the hdmi version is 1.4b. So I would think that the port wouldnt work with a hdmi 2.0 cable. So Im stuck here dont know what to do, do I buy a thunder bolt cable to hdmi since my laptop has a usb type c port? Or what do I do?

Give that it maxes out at 120hz it means that you most likely have a HDMI 1.4 port and cannot get 144hz. I cant find the exact specs for the HDMi version of your laptop so I can say for certain but It could also be you are using a 1.4 cable. I would buy or borrow a cheap HDMI 2.0 or later rated cable and see if it will work. HDMI is backwards compatible with cables.

Also USB Type C doe not mean thunderbolt, Type C is a physical form factor and nothing else, you will need to check the specs to see if it is rated for Thunderbolt speeds.

Honestly I would just use the monitor at 120hz, if you plan on gaming you will never exceed that with those specs in most games.
