I have two computers near each other. They are about 40 feet from the modem/router. One is connected by Ethernet, the other wireless. The Ethernet connection is quite fast, he wireless is painfully slow. I am planning to run another Ethernet cable alongside the original. Is there a better way?

Yes. An ethernet switch.
Router -> 1x ethernet cable -> switch -> 2 PC's.

This prevents running 2 long cables across the house. Just use the existing one.
Near the two PC's, the switch, and a short cable running to each PC.

A switch such one of these:

There will be zero performance impact.

I'm sure there are better options than my suggestion, but one option would be to connect the existing ethernet cable which is currently connected directly to one PC, to a network switch placed near the two computers instead, and then connect the two PCs by ethernet to the switch. Then you'd still have just one long cable, but still able to connect both PCs by ethernet cable.

That's what I have been using for years, a lot of years, so I wouldn't be surprised if a more mordern solution has entered the market since then.
