Most CPUs made in the last 5 years will shut down when a fan fails and/or they get too hot. Just yesterday I was putting Gentoo on my old laptop with a 2.2 GHz Pentium 4-M CPU and I accidentally forgot to compile the ACPI fan control into the kernel- I left it as a module. So I started compiling, and about 10 minutes later, the laptop just shuts off without the fan ever coming on. I looked in the BIOS logs and sure enough, it recorded that the temp hit 94 C and forced a shutdown. I rebooted, modprobed the fan control, and the computer was no worse for the wear.
