Conroe can run without CPU Fan O_O

Most CPUs made in the last 5 years will shut down when a fan fails and/or they get too hot. Just yesterday I was putting Gentoo on my old laptop with a 2.2 GHz Pentium 4-M CPU and I accidentally forgot to compile the ACPI fan control into the kernel- I left it as a module. So I started compiling, and about 10 minutes later, the laptop just shuts off without the fan ever coming on. I looked in the BIOS logs and sure enough, it recorded that the temp hit 94 C and forced a shutdown. I rebooted, modprobed the fan control, and the computer was no worse for the wear.

Kinda reminds me of the toms video a few years back (AMDs burn baby burn). Btw is the fan failing really going to cause the processor to burn (for those who don’t remember the HSF was removed in the AMD article) or do any other permanent damage?

I guess it’s just a marketing ploy………………

Best... video... EVER. I still chuckle when I watch that one.

And the irony of it... several, several years after seeing the video... I accidentally destroyed a friends AMD 1400 (same as in the video)... I was helping him with something and I just needed it to post to verify everything was ok... I just sat the heatsink on top of the CPU and before it ever posted, it was fried. Damn you AMD!

THe ways things are going on cpu's i would belive it would not need a fan just a heatsink and some case fans and good air flow you be all set 😀

So basically the Core2 can run at full load and even with the stock fan shut off it doesn't overheat because it runs cold for it is using low watts. You mean we could passively cool the Core2? That would be nice.

When you consider that the Heatsink manufacturers have jumped on the "passive cooling" bandwagon, and these are working on recent processors(not even the low voltage ones coming out), it's not much of a STRETCH to believe that a Conroe could
run without a fan. Heatsink is a different story, maybe Intels new 1watt
CPU's may get by with the bare die, but that remains to be seen. :?
