Currently using custom gaming laptop i7-i7-4710mq with dock station for my dual monitors w/ NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 4GB card

Considering to get a actual desktop

I don't do gaming although if there is a killer game but id liketo have the option to play uptodate games, but other than that i use it for youtube, movies, web browsing, emails.

i been recommended to get i3 or i5 6500 as i7 would be overkill,
i been contemplating this for few days now so I like your input to help better assess my situation

if i do get another gaming desktop i am going to use the radeon r9 270 grahpic that i salvaged from my died out i7-920 desktop

Actually, How long can i use the Laptop as my Desktop using the Docking station Compared to just buying straight up Gaming desktop?

Solution
I think many people would disagree with me, but if you have the money for it, I'd say go for the i7. Although the i5 is still decent for most gaming these days, the i7 is becoming less and less overkill as games become more and more CPU reliant, so if you want to play up to date games, that might be something worth getting.

Again though, the i5 will be perfect if you, for the most part, just watch youtube and what not.

The i5 would be fine. Getting an i7 is starting to become beneficial for gaming but only if you also have a 144Hz monitor and a current high end graphics card to back it up eg. GTX 1070 or better. If you don't plan on doing a big GPU upgrade in the foreseeable future, there isn't much point in getting an i7.
