Hey Everyone,

So I've had my rig for about 6-7 years and I feel like I'm due for an upgrade. Here are my current specs;

CPU: Intel i7 7700k
Motherboard: Asus Maximus IX Hero
Monitor 1: LG 34 inch curved monitor (gets me 3440x1440 and I'm honestly not sure if that's good anymore nowadays)
Monitor 2: Dell S2716DG - 27" LED Monitor
PSU: EVGA 750 G2
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO 500GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD
Storage: Western Digital - Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive.
Memory: G.Skill - Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3200 Memory
Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
Videocard: Asus GTX 1080 Ti Founders Edition

What do you guys think would be the easiest route in order to upgrade it? I'm big on just doing multiple things at once like watching sporting events (NBA, NFL), surfing the net, browsing YouTube and also gaming separately. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated as always. Thank you everyone. My budget is around $1500-$2000 dollars.

For certain, look at 32gb of ram to hold all your concurrent tasks perhaps even 48/64gb.

You are now 7th generation and we are up to 14th.
Since you are now on Intel, stick with Intel, it will be simpler.
i5-14600K is $320,
A B760 MATX DDR5 motherboard might be $150.
2 x 16gb ddr5 might be $100.

On graphics, a GTX1080ti should be upgraded a couple of tiers.
https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gpu-hierarchy,4388.html

Perhaps to the $800 budget point. perhaps 4070 class.
Again since you are nvidia, stick with nvidia, it is simpler and price/performance is similar.

It is probably time to upgrade the psu to 850w or more.
Look for atx3.0 compatible and a 10 year warranty. Corsair and seasonic are usually good.

No need for exotic cooling, but it must be lga 1700 capable.
What is the make/model of your case?

Thanks for the quick reply I appreciate it. I'm not too sure which case I have to be honest it's been so long I apologize. I want to say an ATX Mid?

Hey also, the i5 is better than the i7? Like an idiot I would've thought the i7 is better because of the higher number lol

I would probably build something like this. The case has no RGB or you can buy it with RGB in black or white.
The 3 versions of the case. https://pcpartpicker.com/products/compare/qP2WGX,KKytt6,QcddnQ/

Get the video card from Newegg and add the free holder for the card.

I see nothing wrong with the monitors.

Thanks for your time writing this up for me. I've probably built 3 or 4 systems and I've never used an AMD processor. Is there a major difference between AMD and Intel?

I guess with this option it'll be a whole new build which I'm not necessarily opposed to I just tried to see if simply upgrading a few parts would suffice which looks like that won't be the case since it looks like I'll have to get a new motherboard so it's like I might as well.

i3/i5/i7/i9 no longer mean what they used to.
Namely how many cores and hyperthreading.
Today, it is more of a generalized power class.

Your i7-7700k has 8 processing threads and a total passmark performance rating of 9654.
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i7-7700K+@+4.20GHz&id=2874

The single thread rating is 2725. The total score is when all the threads are fully busy. The single thread rating is most important for games and desktop quickness.

By comparison, the i5-14600K has 20 threads and a rating of 40394/4294

AMD and Intel have similar price/performance at every price point. Differences are minor.
AMD ryzen processors are very tightly tied to ram for compatibility and performance.
If I find a common thread with ryzen issues it is with ram. Not all ram is compatible.

Neither intel nor ryzen users will overclock any more there is little headroom.
Motherboard makers tweak their motherboards to get the most boost performance for a couple of cores given the capabilities of the cooling system.

I asked about the case. If you have a hyper212, you have enough room for a very good air cooler.
The need for liquid cooling is overhyped.

If you wanted to upgrade graphics and the psu first, run this test:
Run YOUR games, but lower your resolution and eye candy.
This makes the graphics card loaf a bit.
If your FPS increases, it indicates that your cpu is strong enough to drive a better graphics configuration.
If your FPS stays the same, you are likely more cpu limited.

The more I think of it the more I feel like I should just build a new system. New motherboard, RAM, graphics card, processor and PSU. What case would you recommend that ensures everything fits in it?

I'm thinking I'll use the same hard drive of course that has the OS along with the programs and files and the monitors.

I left of the RGB some don't like it but listed all 3 versions of the case.

I just bought the white version great case because my old case don't have enough room for todays long video cards.

Got the extra front filter with it.

Hey do you think this processor : AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D 4.2 GHz 8-Core Processor would pair well with the rest of the specs you recommended?

How about this case? Lian Li LANCOOL 216 ATX Mid Tower Case Is there a way to tell if it'll all fit because I'm going to be getting that NVideo 4070ti. Thanks again for your help.

Hey Everyone. I have an LG monitor with a 3440 x 1440 resolution and I currently have it paired with an i7 7700k and a GTX 1080 Ti. Am I completely wasting the monitor's potential? What should this monitor be paired with if I wanted gaming to be as crisp as possible? Thanks for any help.

What's the refresh rate? That's a pretty big part of the equation.

At 1440p/60 Hz, you're probably doing pretty well. But if you're trying to get high framerates, the GPU and especially the CPU are getting up there in age.

The 7800X3D is the fastest overall gaming CPU in the world right now, I'd say that's a pretty good pairing with anything. The Lian Li 216 will fit pretty much all modern video cards. On PCPP it will tell you the graphics card clearance the case allows.

Here is my opinion given all of the above:

so not going to this upgrade?

I am. I'm gathering/picking parts right now and getting a lot of great advice.

Sorry about that. I thought I was starting a new thread there I don't know how that happened.

No, you did, but I merged them. This is the same general umbrella of questions for the same PC, so just one thread.

Think of it like a trip to the doctors. If you're coughing and have congestion, you don't make one appointment about the cough and then a second appointment with another doctor for the congestion.

Generally speaking, a good rule of thumb is if the solutions that people took the time to give you for the first topic are still relevant and helpful for the second topic, there should only be one thread.

"the solutions that people took the time to give you" And in regards to that part it can be read that I was trying to come across rude. I wasn't.

I didn't mean to suggest that. I'm only explaining why we have this policy. Think of it as the general "you" rather than you specifically. We're pretty direct here; if we think someone is being rude to our posters, we'll come right out and say it, not just imply it through an unrelated policy explanation.

We have some people (not you) who take it to extremes, opening up four, six, or even more threads on the very same problem. And then everybody starting over from square one giving similar advice.

I get it. I just thought since there was a specific 'Monitor' section that I should post the question there. All cleared up now I'll just put all questions in regards to this particular build in this thread. Sorry about that guys.
