Constant blue screens after new HDD installed-blue screens all differ

So I bought a Seagate barracuda 500GB SATA hard drive because my western digital was on its last leg. Everything seemed perfect until a BSOD happened and now I have gotten about 6 and they all appear and disappear quickly so I don't have any time to read why it is blue screening.

Right now it has blue screened and it is doing a "checking file system on C: one of your disks needs to be checked for consistency." What in the world is going on here?!

Great it is only getting worse. I can't be on windows for more than a minute before it blue screens and restarts! Help : / Of course something would go wrong 🙁

Hi Rebecca,

Need much more info about this problem. Is this your C: drive? Did you clone the old one or reinstall? How long after installing the new drive did the stop errors begin? etc...

It soulnds like you can get to the desktop. Go to the System Properties, Advanced Tab, StartUp and Recovery button, and uncheck "System Failure" Automatically Restart checkbox so it will not restart after a BSOD.

That way you can read the stop error message, and stop code.
Can recheck it if you want after the problem is solved.

Yes this is my C drive and only hard drive.

I did a complete reinstall. I first installed my OEM windows vista cd and right after it finished installing and I was on the desktop it blue screened. I didn't give it much thought thinking maybe it was an outdated driver. I installed a couple drivers from windows update (didn't install all updates) and then upgraded to windows 7 with my upgrade cd. It then blue screened again once it reached the desktop and now has blue screened several times while installing updates.

Right now I am in safe mode and it has not blue screened.

Ok it blue screened again while updating windows.

A device driver attempting to corrupt the system has been caught. The faulty driver currently on kernel stack must be replaced with a working version.

I tried doing an sfc/scannow and it failed at 17% says "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation"

Also I am noticing I keep getting "Windows Modular Installer has stopped working"

I had no idea installing a new HDD was going to cause so many issues ....

It is related to a driver problem. Could be a HDD driver, boot class driver, a driver update you've been doing. Now you have a different BSOD.

Try a System Restore Point before you started downloading the updates, or Last Known Good.
Or could uninstall each update in Windows Update.

There is a small applet called "who crashed" which you could download. Then after a BSOD, run it, and it will interpret the Minidmp file and possible point to the bad driver/s. Here's the URL:

Was the old HDD an IDE or SATA, and the new one almost certainly a SATA?

As a last resort, you could possibly do an update reinstall since Vista/Win-7 is now installed.

Both are SATAs.

Hmm the odd thing is it started happening right away before I installed any updates on vista. If it happens again then I will try a repair.

Rebecca, don't forget if your old data is still intact, as a choice on a separate machine, you could clone over your old HDD to this new one.

This mind blowingly frustrating .... I just want to give up and throw this computer out the window.

New BSOD

Disable or uninstall any antivirius, disk defragmentation or backup utilities. Check your hard drive configuration, and check for any updated drivers. Run chkdsk/F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

None .. haven't installed anything besides windows updates, fire fox and steam. The blue screens started when I installed vista and now are 10x worse in windows 7. Fresh install of both so I really don't get it. I don't know if the hard drive is defective or I screwed up somwhere ....

Can't stay in normal mode only safe mode otherwise it will blue screen.

nope can I download it in safe mode and run it? otherwise I doubt the computer will last long enough in norm.

Looks like I need to burn memtest to a disc I don't have any cd's and besides if it was the memory I would of had issues prior to a new hard drive. But, I rarely got blue screens in the past.

Ran whocrashed and it seems to think nvidia is the culprit. lets see if updating the driver works.

Blue screened again and something seems linked to windows update. I try to update and half way through BSOD. I did who crashed it again and it is still suggesting nvidia but I already updated it.

Another Blue screen BAD_POOL_STORAGE whatever that means. Every time I go to download windows update BSOD bullshit.

If Who Crashed points to NVidea drivers, you could download the latest non beta version to a different computer, then use a flash drive to copy it over.

Or you could just uninstall all the NVidea drivers and programs for now and see it that clears it up. There is a feature to "fully or complete uninstall" Nvidea in the Add/Remove Programs section. Forget the exact name. Your display will will still work without all the NVidea drivers & it may determine if that's the problem.
