Continuing PC problem

Okay so I've been helping a friend with his PC for a bit now, and I've tried a lot of things and it still keeps messing up.

Here's the deal:

His PC is an older rig, it's got an older core i5, and a GTX 560 ti in it.

Originally it kept getting stuck on "starting windows" screen (it's windows 7). So I narrowed it down to the GPU drivers.

I reinstalled windows, and that seemed to fix the issue, to a point.

However, ANYTIME I update the GPU drivers, it breaks the PC, regardless of what I do.

Instead of it freezing on "Starting Windows" it gets to that screen, and then the entire Graphic signal goes out.

We've tried switching between DVI, and HDMI, always does the same thing.

I've uninstalled the GPU drivers many times, and that ALWAYS fixes it.

So, without any graphical drivers, it works fine, 100% of the time. But if I install ANY graphic drivers at all, it makes the signal drop out.

I even installed drivers from January 2016, etc.

The problem is also, I was borrowing this SAME PC around March of this year, and it worked absolutely fine, had the NEWEST graphics drivers, and played games even.

I don't know what happened, or how to fix it. I'm no expert, but I know my way around most basic PC things, and I just can't figure it out.

I would check to see what your friend monitor is capable of in resolution, but also what its maximum refresh rate is set at that resolution.

Power the system up, and when booting press the F8 key when the system is booting in rapid succession.
When you get to the windows os loading options choose safe mode.

Set the screen resolution for the graphics card to display making sure the correct Hz range is selected Matt.

One more thing matt, if the motherboard has its own on board video solution just check in windows device manager and the display adapters listing if the On board video solution or driver is installed and running.

If you have a listing of the Nvidia GTX 560 card and the on board video graphics solution enabled also.

Right click on the On board video adapter reference. and disable it.

Click ok or apply if asked then reset the system and again let it load windows 7 in its normal mode.

It may be a case of conflict because two display adapters and video drivers are running at the same time, and disabling the on board video adapter of the motherboard in windows device manager it will correct the problem you are having ok.

Post back on what happens after doing the instructions provided, let me know if the same problem exists or it fixed it ok Matt.

I have checked in Device manager, and it only ever shows a single display adapter, I don't believe his PC has onboard graphics, and I didn't even see the option to plug a video cable of any kind into the Mobo.

Also, speaking of the resolution, that's the weird thing. His monitor is a 1920 x 1080 monitor, however in the resolution settings, it ONLY allows me to select 1280 x 1024.

The Hz is set correctly, the monitor is set for 60Hz (which it's rated for) and the settings are also set to display at that.

If issue shows up soon as you try to install the video card driver, that points to a bad card, possibly a bad power supply or PCIe slot.

First step, test the card in a known good system.

It shows up right after they are installed. As in, I install them, and then reboot the system (as is usual for driver installs), and RIGHT after the reboot is when the problem occurs. UNTIL I reboot in safe mode, and remove the driver I just installed.

I will have to try testing his GPU in MY PC to see if that's the case then, as my PC literally has never had a problem, and I know it works 100%, I will try that soon, and let you know what happens.
