I recently got myself a 2nd monitor. An ACER GN246HL. I hooked it up through HDMI. Compared to my AOC G2260VWQ6 (on DisplayPort), I immediately noticed the differences in color intensity and later the difference in contrast.

The new ACER monitor had a huge problem with dark colors. Everything would blend into a black, making dark scenes in movies or games not visible at all, while on the AOC monitor the scene was clearly visible despite the ACER claiming to have a higher contrast ratio. I've spent so much time fiddling with brightness and contrast but even maxing those out, the dark shadows remained black with no definition.

Today i tried switching cables in case the 1st one was faulty. Second HDMI cable had the same contrast. I tried to hook it up to the VGA input and to my surprise, the difference was incredibly noticeable. Now i could clearly see dark scenes. I believe the colors got a bit de-saturated, but nothing major.

Does HDMI perform poorly with dark colors and contrasts or could it be my video output?

First, the panels are different on both monitors and in essence their calibration. Second, HDMI is a digital signal while VGA is analog and it's for this reason you see a difference in the display/color output.

What GPU are you working with? What driver version are you on for your graphics card?

HDMI should make no difference. Completely different monitor will never be set exactly to match the other monitor.

Currently have a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950 with 560.35.03 linux drivers
