My old WD NAS has been deemed not secure due to reasons I don't fully understand, and there have been no new firmware updates in years. But it has a perfectly good HDD and contains useful data I'd like to access. Is there any way to convert it to a USB drive? It only has a single I/O port on its case; an Ethernet LAN port. Is it possible to somehow use the NAS as a simple usb drive?

Copy ALL the data off to some other drive.
Take the drive out of the WD enclosure.
Put it in some other USB enclosure.
Reformat the drive.
Copy the data back to it.

What is telling you 'not secure'?
