Ford did not build the first car. Ford was the first to mass produce cars that were affordable for the common man. There were cars before that but were only obtainable by the very wealthy.

And it is a different situation. Asetek has a patent which means they developed a technology and they use that technology. If a company decides to use said technology then they are required to check first if there is a patent and if there is to negotiate use of that technology for a fee.

If companies didn't protect their intellectual property then any cheap manufacture would be making copies that were inferior and undercutting the companies.

Imagine if you came up with the perfect tech for something and started selling it but then lost everything because someone undercut you. I would imagine you would not be very happy.

So because of this patent we, "the end user/ customers" will get stuck with this same aging technology for the next 10 - 20 years. Antec has already moved on from Asetek and came up with their own pump/fan mounted on the radiator, so other companies are innovating. If Swiftech can only come up with a way to integrate the reservoir into the radiator along with a micro pump things will go south for Asetek real fast.

Obviously we are not stuck with the same design. Swiftech and Antec have both came up with their own design and so has Zalman.

You also have to remember Asetek is also still innovating. The first generation of Asetek designs were OK but the newer ones are much better.

The system does need some work, such as fir use of the patents and fair pricing, but I don't get why people are so upset at Asetek for protecting their intellectual property. If anything the others should be chastised for just ripping a company off instead of developing their own idea.

Besides it isn;t as if the CM designed pumps are the best AiOs out there. I would much rather have a Corsair or Swiftech design over a CM design any day.

definitely not. Asetek doesn't have a patent on all-in-one liquid coolers in general, just this specific "cold-plate" design.
Cooler Master may have even designed this type they were using on their own. but because Asetek already had the patent for the specific technology Cooler Master is out of luck in this particular situation.
