Hi Everyone,
First of all I have been a longtime reader of the site and the forums and have always found them both very informative so thanks and keep up the great work. This is my first post here so be gentle :).

I used a CM Elite 110 Case to create a small 2-drive NAS(Running Freenas 9.3)/Plex machine last August. The build is very simple and linked here and cost me about $480 when I bought it http://pcpart/mynas.

While everything seems to be running smoothly so far, I am somewhat worried about the drive temperatures I am getting which can reach 45-50 degrees Celcius. Part of the problem is that the room temp is usually 25-30 C(80-90F) but let us assume that this cannot be reduced further. I had initially put both the Toshiba HDDs in the top bracket and pointed the PSU fan side inwards to suck out hot air from within the chassis since I only have one 120 mm fan cooling the system otherwise (this is the standard case fan that sucks in cold air from the front through a mesh).I was able to reduce temps by a couple of degrees C by moving one of the drives to the side panel of the case (PSU still sucks lukewarm air).

However not sure what I can do further that might help.
Here are the options I am considering
1) Add 2x80m side fans though not sure if this is doable with the side mounted 3.5 inch HDD
2) Replace the 120mm front case fan with a higher flow or pressure fan
3) put a wet napkin on the case every morning when I leave for work 😉

Any suggestions to cool down my drives will be very appreciated. I know the drives are rated to 60-70 C and that I used a small and poor airflow case in a hot environment and probably shouldn't expect much more. Still most drive temp. failure studies show a steep rise in failure rates above 40 degrees C so am concerned that I am setting this little machine for failure.

Thanks

Heat is always a problem in that case....the problem is generally, you only have the PSU to exhaust heat leaving the 'warmed up' ambient air in the case.

You could add the 80mm fans on the side, and mount both HDDs on the top bracket, but I'm not convinced you'd see substantially cooler temps.

Adding a better front 120mm might be a good option, and you could then use 1x 80mm side fan as an exhaust.

It might help...

Thanks for the response. Any specific fans that you would recommend?
