Hi guys.. my apologies if this question has been asked elsewhere.. I tried doing google research and I'm getting conflicting answers on this ... I did see this thread

My PC currently has the somewhat old (purchased year 2018) " Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo CPU Cooler, 4 CDC Heatpipes, 120mm PWM Fan, Aluminum Fins for AMD Ryzen/Intel LGA1200/1151 " model number RR-212E-20PK-R2 ... here's the newegg link to the webpage product listing from back when I bought it

and I should point out that I don't think this is the "version 2" newer model I think it's the older one.

I'm trying to decide if it's worth saving some money and just re-using this on say a Ryzen 5 5600x processor (to give an example ) .... this website seems to recommend the same model number based on the amazon link they give as an okay "budget cooler"

and in this youtube video assuming this guy is using the same model number cooler as what I am using (that setup he's using looks identical to what I have in terms of the X shaped mounting bracket, backplate and screws) then looks like I'm all set

but... I guess it would be nice to just get some confirmation from someone that this will work .. both in terms of will my current cpu cooler actually mount onto an AM4 socket and whether or not it will provide enough cooling.

I do not plan on overclocking the CPU, I would be using it for gaming, and I have a mid sized tower case (Phanteks Pro M Series (PH-ES515PTG_BK) Tempered Glass ATX Mid Tower Case, Black ) with .. feel free to laugh at me but I'm the paranoid type ... two fans mounted at the front of the case, two fans at the top of the case, one fan on the back of the case, and the cooler I'm using has two 120 mm fans mounted on it as well.

If this makes a difference I was thinking of the "ASRock B450 Steel Legend Socket" motherboard which according to PC part picker will take the hyper 212 evo so ... hopefully pcpartpicker isn't lying to me?

That model does support the AM4 socket. It should have come with an AM4 mounting bracket (along with an Intel bracket). If you do not have the bracket then you won't be able to mount it on an AM4 motherboard.

The Hyper 212 Evo has been around for many years (long before 2018 or the AM4 socket). Cooler Master of course makes a new bracket for each new CPU socket that comes out. If you bought yours in 2018, and that is the link to it you provided, then yours should have an AM4 bracket.

AFAIK, all 212 versions are compatible with AM4 socket. If you don't have the AM4 bracket, you can get it from the manufacturer. The performance difference between the versions are not significant. They perform around the same ballpark with the newer version being marginally better due to structural change involving surface area.
It is okay for mild to medium gaming sessions, but for intense gaming sessions involving long hours it can struggle a bit. You should use it as you already own it and keep track of thermals, on the basis of which you can evaluate whether you need a bigger cooler or not.

Hellfire13 if I wanted to be on the safe side, is there a better cooler say in the $30 to $40 range so that my CPU wouldn't struggle? (I do game for very long periods of time, say 3 to 5 hours straight sometimes - I don't know if that's what you meant by long hours ) ... maybe this one? (" be quiet! Pure Rock 2 Black, BK007, 150W TDP, CPU Cooler, Elegant Black Surface, HDT Technology " )

Cooler is only one part of the equation. Thermals also depend on motherboard VRM, case, case airflow and ambient. And sometimes some of these variables or a combination of them can influence the outcome in different ways.
I would still suggest that you try the 212 first since you already own it and then see whether you need something better. The price range you have quoted will give you mostly similar coolers with some slightly better ones like the Pure Rock or Arctic Freezer Duo. You can use the link below as a rough guide and figure out the options you have at their respective price points and their relative worth or price to performance gain...

That was super helpful Hellfire13 thank you so much ... that web link showed me something unexpected... if I understand it correctly the hyper 212 evo falls into the same tier, tier 8, as the be quiet cooler I was considering purchasing which is unexpected .. given the age of my cpu cooler I just assumed the be quiet brand one being newer would be better... so very useful info thank you ...

Honestly I'm terrified of removing the cpu from the cooler and damaging it so I tend towards just flat out buying a new cpu cooler despite having a perfectly good older one .... I did find this youtube video outlining proper removal of a cpu cooler

although some people online say run your PC for 30 minutes ... and I guess according to one user online wear a freaking oven mitt in case you burn your hand grabbing that heat sink ... I'm probably going to run the PC for 30 minutes then because I'm paranoid use dental floss on top of that to make absolutely certain I don't damage the pins on the old CPU and/or the motherboard like this guy said on quora (basically get the floss in at a corner and pull it through in an attempt to remove it without twisting)

I'll be removing the motherboard with the CPU and heatsink attached to it from my PC case first before trying to get the cooler off it, which I guess will help in terms of having room to maneuver .. I like the idea of collecting enough old parts (old CPU and motherboard in this case) until I can cobble together a frankenstein PC and then donating it to a friend in need ... though sadly with Win 10 becoming not supported come.. Oct 2025 I think? ... the friend would have to make do with an older version of Windows Microsoft is not releasing security patches for anymore...

If you can find it for $25 it is a decent cooler. However, only 1 tire above what you have currently isn't necessarily worth the upgrade. You will only find about 2-3C cooler temps at most and at times could be no difference at all. I would use your current cooler until you decide on what you want. I would recommend a tier 5 or 6 cooler if you are upgrading from a Hyper 212 Evo.

At that price range, they are all 120mm single fan units. For something better with a noticeable difference you have to get a dual fan unit with preferably 140mm fans. And that would take you to double the price range with a good quality unit, like this...

Having said that.. I will listen to wiser heads than mine, screw up my courage and try re-using my current hyper cooler and see what happens... given that I don't technically really NEED the existing CPU/motherboard that would be replaced anymore it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if I wrecked them despite my best efforts during the heat cooler removal ... but it would be nice to preserve them to help out friends in the future with the aforementioned frankenstein PC build someday ... thanks again all you guys
