I put together the 3 ghz P4 + ECS 848p-a mboard on special at Fry's (see other post), but it booted up at 80 C and went up from there - it shuts itself off after a minute or two. I am returning the cheapie ($15) fan/ht-sink) and am looking for something that will SOLVE MY PROBLEM. I am open to suggestions. They have a $40 job there that is massively heavy and runs at 4600 rpm and has heatpipes - but, maybe I should mail-order something. Any advice? What coolers have been used here? Could a P4 be defective and just be an overheater no matter what? It suprised me that it was so hot on bootup????? Maybe I should return the whole shebang and forget about building my own. I really don't know what to do about the excessive heat - and that was from just booting up and no processing at all! Help. littleberry

heya Littleberry;

The stock Intel Heatsink and Fan is the proper application, and you dont need more then that for standard operation.

I think my mistake was that this deal was for a "bare" CPU.
If Fry's does not carry the stock INTEL heatsink/fan then I wonder what I have to do to get one. I am seeing now that maybe I got myself in over my head here. I never had a problem with the old P2's and p3's, but, this one is so small and probably needs greater skills than I have to properly affix the heatsink/fan to the CPU. Maybe Fry's will have the proper Intel fan for this model. littleberry
