Hi, so recently it started getting really warm where I live and that reflects indoors as the room where I have my PC doesn't have air conditioning. I'm guessing it's roughly about 27C – 32C in the room.
And before I get into it, my build is:
OS: Windows 10
Case: Fractal Design R4
CPU: Intel Core i7 4790K (Stock Speeds)
Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
GPU: Asus GTX 770 DCUII / Nvidia Reference GTX 770
PSU: Corsair HX1000i
RAM: Kingston HyperX 16 GB (4x4)
Storage: Samsung 840 EVO / Seagate Barracuda 2 TB (x2)
I also have some fans:
-2 Stock Fans; Front Intake
-1 Stock Fan; Rear Exhaust
-1 Stock Fan Bottom Intake
-1 Noctua nf-p14s redux Side Intake
Okay moving on, I recently did some routine cleaning and thought why not some cable management as well. In my opinion, I thought I created more space and improved airflow. However, it didn't seem to help or because the ambient temperature is higher.
So as of now my CPU is sitting at 40C – 45C at idle and at light tasks it can go up to 55C – 65C. And once I start games, it gets to be about 71C – 77C. Now prior to this, idle temperatures would sit around the 30C – 35C range and medium usage falls within 40C – 46C with games pushing into 61C – 65C. Now a ~10C change doesn’t seem too bad, but I’m worried that even more demanding tasks could push it even higher (80C’s +). I thought this increase could be due to the excessive heat produced by the SLI GTX 770’s. So then I decided to remove the second 770 to decrease the amount of heat and increase the air flow for my first 770 to lower my temperatures as my GPU’s were hitting 85C. However, my CPU is still running at the same temperatures. Also I realized that the HX1000i has a zero RPM mode so it gives off quite a bit of heat at idle since the fans don’t spin until you draw a certain load (nothing I can really do about it there).
So now I’ve purchased a Noctua NH-D15. Now I’ve heard amazing things about the Noctua and have tested their product, but I’m not sure if liquid cooling would be better as I accidentally purchased a Corsair H105 last week and was thinking of returning it, but might give it a go. So I would be really grateful if you guys can give me some tips or thoughts as to how I should go about this.
Thanks!
