So, I have this crazy/weird idea (I don't know if someone has already done it..) to cool my desktop, and yes, I said it, my very own desktop unit. The last time I posted was about building my rig, and finally after a year of saving, I've built and completed it. Here's my recent specs (still, don't have a proper storage but it's usable lol):

*Gigabyte AORUS Z370 Gaming 5
*Intel Core i7-8700k
*Palit Super JetStream GTX GeForce 1070ti
*G.Skill Trident Z 16GB (2x8GB) 3200MHz
*FSP Hydro GE 80+ Gold 650W
*Gigabyte PRO SSD 256GB
*DeepCool GAMMAXX GT Single Tower RGB CPU AirCooler
*DeepCool Matrexx 55 Add-RGB (w/ 3+1 Fans)
*Stock Monitor, Keyboard and Mouse from my last rig

#Idle Temps:
CPU: 34-36C
GPU: 33-39C
Motherboard: 35-38C

#Gaming Temps (AC Origins, Far Cry 5, The Witcher 3, BioHazard 2, GTA V, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, etc.) All in Ultra High:
CPU: 58-75C
GPU: 47-67C

#Software/Application Usage Temps (Adobe CC Photoshop and Animate):
Much like idle temps at least, but a little higher of 3-5C

Here's the thing, I'm planning to cool my unit using a refrigerator, like a fridge used at icicles, ice creams, etc. that kind of fridge. I don't know if this is strange or unusual but, do you have any advice or suggestions? I wanted to put the unit inside; I think you get the point of what I'm planning to do. I have some questions though:

  1. Should I worry about the moist the fridge will make?
  2. Does it have some cons (aside from electricity consumption, obviously)?
  3. And, is it cool (no pun intended) to use it like that? I mean, cooling a computer that way?

PS: I'm in a tropical country, air conditioning my room is out of the option for me at least. I guess, I just wanted the unusual, that is all (to risk and to try a new take). Just wanted to get some commentary on this future predicament of mine.

Thank you and good day! Cheers!

wow, This idea blew my mind. Cant personally help you with this in any way but I remember one video on youtube From LinuchTechTips where the watercool a whole room but with out a fridge. so that may help you. What i can say you will have to do some handy crafting for this because they do not usually sell refrigerator cooled pc on the market 😀D so just type in youtube Water cooling a whole room or so... good luck with this! contact me if you will be able to do this I became even interested 😀DD

This has been tried many times.

Downsides:
Condensation
You'll burn out the compressor. SOON. They are not made for a constant heat source inside the box.

Upsides:
None, really.

Air can hold up to a certain amount of water in vapor form. The cooler the air, the less water it can hold. When the ambient air temperature drops enough that it can no longer hold the water vapor it already contains, you get fog or rain. When a localized region of air drops below this point, you get condensation. The water drops out of the air and collects on things.

You will have this problem cooling the entire interior of your PC case. The air in the case has a certain amount of water, you cool it, and the water drops out of the air and condenses on the electronics (possibly shorting something). Air conditioners have this problem too. They solve it by cooling the air below the desired temperature, collecting water that drops out in a pan, then heating the cool air slightly before sending it out into the room. That last heating step (1) gives some leeway so you don't get condensation, and (2) lowers the humidity so the air is more comfortable.

Your idea was tried with Peltier coolers - solid state electronics which create a thermal gradient - cool on one side, hot on the other. Basically a refrigerator with no moving parts. You can probably still find peltier coolers for sale for your CPU or GPU. They've fallen out of favor due to the condensation problem. (They're still used for active cooling in satellites, where there is no risk of condensation.)

LOL....I actually did this with a spare mini chest freezer 8-or-so years ago and, yeah, the compressor does tank pretty quickly.

After that, during the Summer months here in Southern California, I did divert a portion of the airflow from the window air conditioner so that it's feeding the intake fans on the computer cabinet. (Kludged dryer venting with a 3600 RPM muffin fan mid-span.)

No problem with condensation in that scenario and, since I just cleaned the computer, yesterday (after 4 years of having not cleaned it), I'm guessing that I won't have to do even that, this Summer.

Lol! Well, I think a normal fridge will do 😀 but I guess now that I'm imagining it, it does need some modifications for adaptation. Also, I don't think I can even pull something like that on my own, I'm technically a beginner in comes on PC building or moddings in that kind of matter at least. Thanks for the video.. heck I knew, Linus comes up with this similar idea (cooling the whole system) in his long time career in computers and information technology haha 😀

PS: I guess, I won't be having any conversations nor contact with you in the future I'm afraid lol 😀, since I think, this is rather an impossible feat to begin with (although, some have done it before), without any dangers on the hardware. But still, if I have money (of course), well I can still revive the idea hahaha

Thanks man!

A normal fridge will also die. It will just cost a lot more in electricity before it does.

Thanks for the heads up. I somewhat knew about the compressors though 😀 this was some kind of experimental and well, an initial idea to cool a system unit. This is basically a new setup, my files and data were still on my old unit, so I'm taking some risks lol (I'm not rich to begin with, if you're wondering haha I'm just a fool who wants to take this to the next level. I'm half-serious about this btw if I have the right tools and references lol). I'm installing/uninstalling AAA games and applications to test how long does my build can take 😀.

It's been a month or two from the time I've completed this build, so far no anomalies on the components, just a crazy idea I've come up with haha. And yes, condensation is the term I wanted to know, really thankful for your insights 😀

I remember what Linus said, that water is more dangerous to a computer rather than heat.

You have to be real careful about what you see in those Linus and other utube videos. What is "possible" is not always "practical".

  1. He has a large budget and donated parts.
  2. He has a whole staff to try it 10 different ways before they find the one way that it sort of works.
It is "possible" to build a car that will do a 4 or 5 second 1/4 mile. It is not "practical" to drive it every day.
But you do get momentary bragging rights.

Currently, your CPU seems to be reaching a max temp of 75C. Using some exotic cooling method (fridge, peltier, liquid nitrogen) to get that temp down to 50, 40, 20C...gains you exactly zero performance increase.
It wasn't reaching the thermal throttling limit to begin with.

That’s ok take care😀

I had a very similar project idea, but it just involved using the compressor of a mini fridge with an exhaust pipe (probably use flexible duct pipe or something) attached directly to the intake fans of my PC. It would not be practical unless you were doing some serious overclocking, or if the ambient room temperatures are going to be increasing in the summer. Honestly, I think your temps will be fine as is, but it is a good concept idea and I'm still doing it to see if a can pump some crazy Overclocks on my rig, only using air.
