I just swapped out the motherboard, CPU, and RAM for my build, so the CPU is Fresh. The liquid cooler was previously used on my old build, so I cleaned the residual thermal paste from the copper heat spreader. After both the CPU and Spreader were clean and dry, I followed the Ryzen procedure for thermal paste, which is recommended as a 1mm thick line down the center of the CPU. I used Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Paste

As of now, the build has been complete for a few hours. It's not overheating, but the idle temperatures are in the 40's. It can bounce anywhere from 31 to 52 degrees C. But usually stays between 39 and 44 degrees. This seems high according to the cooler manufacturer.

I'm wondering if this is an issue with my application of thermal paste, a defect in the cooler, or a problem with my coolant configuration. For a cooler configuration, I have a 280mm radiator for the water cooler mounted on the top of the case, pulling air in, and blowing it down into the case. I have 1 front case fan, puling air in, and pushing it through the case, and 1 rear fan, at CPU height, pulling air from the case, and pushing it out the back.

I'm wondering if there are any major issues you can notice from what I've said, or if it's likely just the fact that Arctic Silver 5 requires 200 hours to reach max effectiveness.

Heya! If possible, it'd be better if your radiator was on the front of your case as an intake. There could be all sorts of other issues though including uneven paste application to needing to flatten out your cpu heat spreader and/or the cold plate on your cpu cooler. Good luck!

I'll look into moving it, but I'm fairy confident the reason I mounted it top was because the radiator didn't fit on the front of the case, so that may not be an option. If thats the case, I'll likely need more case fans. Thanks for the advice! If I notice the issue persisting I'll check the spread of the thermal paste!

Never worry too much about idle temps. The only temps that matter are load temps.

Having your rad on top is perfectly fine and is a pretty standard configuration. Make sure there is no cable clutter or anything blocking the front intake in particular.
