Copy from vista to usb memory

Hello, to any one who could please help me.
I am trying to copy a file from Vista onto a USB memory stick which can then be read by windows XP. I have tried and get the error message "parameter is incorrect" when trying to open the file on XP. I welcome any advice, my sincere thanks to all who have read this.and for any answers.

Just drag the file or folder to the drive.

What file are you copying? Does XP have the program needed to run that file?
